Toulouse Geese Thread

Nim and Rod (production Toulouse both had orange eye rims, they were hatched here from eggs from a BYC'r who got stock from metzers

Okay I just went and looked at Missy eyes, she does have an orange rim around them. I know I had to have seen it before but just didn't pay any attention to it till gryeyes mentioned it. I'm so observant

Well, except for those orange eye rims and a slightly different bill "profile" it is sometimes difficult for me to tell Angus and Kate apart when they are not close together. *I* feel very unobservant, not being able to tell unless one of them is in profile... Kate's bill has a more.... Regal? Slope to her bill. Angus has a bit of a slighter curve in his. If it's after dark, I know I'm looking at Kate because she is duck-centric and out guarding them as the ducks sleep or swim. Angus goes into the coop at night with the chickens.

I love them both.

Are there differences in body size between a male & female toulouse?

GB, if they are from the same hatch year you can often tell the ganders by size, if you have an older goose with a young gander you may have to wait for him to grow out.

2-3 small feathers from the chest for DNA testing sent to Avian Biotech though is an easy peasy way for anyone to know the genders. You do need to have some way to ID the birds, so say colored zip ties on legs as bands, or actual poultry leg bands that are numbered and stay on permanently.

I know some dont like the idea of leg bands, but if you are going to breed you NEED to band and ID and track who is who in a flock for pairing and tracking of off spring to know quality of breed pairings for the future as well as supplying unrelated hatchlings. Even Holderreads uses permanent butt end leg bands on his birds, and they get cold and snow so that is not an excuse to not use them.

The Dewlap toulouse gander I bought from Holderreads had a perm leg band on him, I live an hour or two from Holderreads and the lag bands did not harm the gander at all we get 2-3ft of snow yearly! So if I am taking your info right Celtic, thea toulous gander has an orange rim around his eye? and the goose does not? as I have one dewlap now and I believe it is a goose, she was hatched here under a duck. So I have never been able to compare two dewlaps side by side.
