Toulouse Geese Thread

Just a word of warning. Rescues use soapy water yo remove oiks from birds to save them. Since this is s pet goose the use of soapy water monthly is stripping her GOOD oils used to keep the feathers in proper condition. This can open the bird up to mites/lice by breaking down her natural waterproofing.

Wow Molly's babies are getting so big! How cute they all look running around together!

And definitely keep us updated on Caleb's courting! That sounds like fun to watch!!!

If I got a baby boy toulouse for Trina next spring, could she see him as a mate or would I need to get an already grown boy for her?
I know it's only a small chance to begin with because she was mostly raised just with people and chickens, but I've always known I wanted to get more geese and would love to get her a mate that we could raise too.

Lunch at Beyond Bread - she is so well behaved in public EXCEPT that she knows the lettuce (for interested passerby's to give her a treat) is in my purse, was sure she could get that bag down herself!

Bubble bath! She only gets a good cleaning once, maybe twice, a month if she get's stinky. She get's lots of plain old water baths, but she takes those outside in her new big rubber tub! It's just the perfect size for her!

She's too quick for me so this was my best bubble head shot lol

Relaxing at bedtime

I know you enjoy seeing your girl taking a bubble bath but as celtic says this is not a good idea. You should only do this if she had oil on her. You do not want to hurt her by bathing her in the bubble bath. It does strip the natural oils from the goose. Then she will get those nasty critter's on her which her natural oils keep them off her. Plus drinking soapy water is really not good for her! Just put her in a natural tub of water and let her have fun in it. You still get to enjoy watching her in the tub...

I think so too, it took a while for my gander to realize he was a goose being raised by a duck and living with them for so long, But he does now and it's a joy to watch the 2 of them together,. Yes get her one as soon as you can I waited over 6 years.
Are ganders less likely to be people friendly? Or is that totally an individual goose personality thing?

I know you guys are worried about the soap, and I certainly don't claim to know more about geese than you guys that IS why I'm here after all to learn from you, but Trina lives indoors and gets inspected daily. If she had any sort of parasite we would know and get it taken care of. Because she is indoors, she has to be a little extra clean if she gets into things, and her shampoo is specially for birds to help reduce the stripping of her natural oils but of course nothings perfect. She goes to the vet regularly and everything we do with her has been OK'd by her vet. She's an avian specialist and owns chickens, ducks and geese herself so while she may not have been trained on fowl, it is important to her to keep up to date so I trust her advise completely. I really do appreciate your concern for Trina though so thank you!

edit - I guess I should explain that the actual BUBBLE bath was an accident, when she gets "cleaned" by me it's just a quick shower and shampoo after a plain water bath. I'm not entirely positive what caused all the bubbles as I turned on the tub and left it running (she loves the running faucet) while I waited for it to fill and when I came back to shut of the water she was playing in the bubbles. It was just too cute an accident to pass up the photo op. I would guess someone just spilled some body wash or something in the tub, but the bubble bath was a one time thing even though the "cleaning" is done as needed. She still has plain old water "baths" to splash and play in daily.

I think ganders are more protective of their mate during mating season and can be a handful then and when goslings are in the mix too. But I think over all ganders can be pretty people friendly if use to people from the beginning. But if you don't want goslings then get another goose. and raise it along with Trina. that way it will maybe bond with you both.

The bird safe soaps are geared to budgees, parrots ect. Waterfowl NEED the natural oils to keep their feathers in good condition. Waterfowl dont contract mites/lice easily because of the natural defense built in by preening the oil over their feathers. Clean water is what they need to stay clean in good condition. Even show people use soap sparingly on their show geese/ducks.

Hello! I love that there is a Toulouse Thread :) Here is my gander Jeremy enjoying some kale... his favorite treat <3

I was wondering if anybody else's Toulouse Geese terrorize your chickens? Mine coddle my ducks but try to pull my chickens tail feathers out... such stinkers! They are very lovey towards my boyfriend and I (and completely apathetic towards the dogs) but seem to really have it out for the chickens. I'd love any feedback :)

I'd also love to see more pictures of your beautiful birds... mine are just the joys of my life!

Jeremy is a nice looking gander , my geese don't mind the chickens much as long as they stay out of their way same with the ducks they tolerate them as long as they give them a wide birth now they would love to bully the dogs but I had to put a stop to that bit of nonsense before someone got hurt.

What a handsome boy!

My chickens pick on Trina my toulouse. They steal her food when she is outside! She is not used to them though. She used to chase them around but I think my little serama rooster might have scared her.
