Toulouse Geese Thread

Trina and I went out this morning to feed the chickens and she went straight for her big tub of fresh water. Soon one of the young roosters chased her out of her bath, poor girl.
But now she is doing something I've never seen her do before, she's standing in the driveway making this weird barking noise. I usually let her stay out for the morning so she can play in the water and preen and eat her breakfast. But she's not eating or bathing or preening, just standing in the driveway barking! Does anyone know what this is? She seems fine otherwise, she tripped getting out the door but she wasn't hurt or anything. It's really funny looking, I'm trying to get a video of it

Could it be she is calling for a mate?

I am hoping some of you on this thread can help me :) I am looking into Toulouse geese. I really would like to start with the breed, but I am worried that I have a 8 and 10 year old that the geese may be aggressive with.. Any advise/tips? Thanks!!

The dewlaps are so slow your kids could get away if you ever got one that was aggressive.

But the breed is very laid back. My two were not handled while young, so hiss at us when we get too close. They do it out of fear. Never even attempted to bite us - not even when we were catching them for show.

You think? I've been trying to find her someone, but it's not really goose season =P
But finding one more her age maybe easier, since this is probably the time of year folks are sorting out ganders they will keep and the ones to sell. Try Craigslist, Ebay and Here on BYC you never know.

Are you looking at Dewlap Toulouse or French Production? I have the Production Toulouse and she is a sweet heart, but does not like to be touched or held, I do have Grand children 15-13-10 and both them and the geese have had to learn to respect each other, children need to be taught to walk slowly and talk softly around geese and geese need to be taught to respect all humans in their family no matter their age or size. But the 2 need to be always done with supervision of an adult. .

Is ebay a reliable source? Geese don't seem to be very popular around here, I've actually been checking CL for over a year looking for a geese when I first decided I wanted some, and continuously for a friend for Trina. There was one a long time ago but his owner wanted him to go with his whole flock.

Would there be any trouble introducing her to a full grown male? She was around chickens, but not geese after a few weeks old, and she is super scared of the chickens - they steal her food LOL mean little serama! That's why I was hoping for something small and young, but if she would get used to a grown goose or gander I may be able to get one from a rescue here in town, however I know they are not at all people friendly.

I'd try the rescue, My gander had never been around anything but chickens and ducks, a Muscovy duck hatched him, so last Aug 2012 I found a Toulouse goose 4 months old for him. It took a while but they are inseparable now. Intros need to be done slowly, but I think she would take to a gander pretty good.
