He must have done it before you got him, Missy just recently ripped her outer toenail off and she bleed quite a bit even walked with a limp for a few days.
Ouch! That sounds rough!!!!

So they don't drop them in a molt?
It couldn't have been before I got him, he for sure had all his nails because he's super clumsy and stepped in something that caused a ton o crap to stick to his foot the first day we brought him home and I washed him feet off really good, I would have noticed then.
He also scratched me pretty bad when I was carrying him to the car from the rescue and there are bruises from all 3 toenails.
Weird!!

Yep weird because either he bleed and you didn't see it or he hasn't any blood. I've had Scovy's knock off toe nails before too and they bleed. Something you may never know.

I have a ripped toenail story............. One morning, when going out to feed, I see my white African gander with his lower part of body completely stained in blood. I freaked out and called a friend who is very skilled with emergency first aid. He raced over and we caught our gander and carefully examined him, convinced he had a serious body wound. Turns out, it was a ripped off toenail, and he had been laying on his foot, causing his pure white feathers to become very stained. The nail had already stopped bleeding by the time we examined him, so we cleaned him up and all was fine.

What do you all do for your geese/ducks during the winter? We have one gander and three geese, as well as a handful of ducks. We plan on using a heated water bowl for water (as we do for our chickens), however, I wonder if the geese/ducks will need water to 'play' in during the winter? How's that work? Will they go out in the snow like the chickens do?

Thanks,
Hope

Mine go out in the snow, and I use heated buckets too, as for bathing they get a cement mixing tub to wash in when the temps go above freezing, that way at end of day I can dump it instead of having frozen pool water to mess with.

Wonderful... my gander is broken or a zombie lol
A zombie gander sounds like the making of a movie. You'd make millions probably
