Toulouse Geese Thread

Be sure to keep pics coming so we can follow growth too. it's so much fun to watch the changes taking place. None of your ganders fight?
Ok, will post more pics...I only have two ganders, one is the son of the other. I have had other ganders, but they were more quarrelsome and never got to breed as I sold them on. I kept one young gander last year as this strain seems to be so very mild-tempered. I´ll keep more young ganders this year, as I want to have even numbers of ganders and geese. I´m a bit concerned about in-breeding, as I´ve no idea if the ones I already have are related...\I think they most probably are. But, I once saw other dilute geese with the white faces in a bird shop an hour away, so I´ll have to talk to the owner, and if I can get some of them I should be ok. I want to keep my ganders as they´re so great.
These geese that I have seem to function better in pairs. At the moment, the younger gander (Spot) wants to be with the 2 geese that have his 4 goslings, but also with the goose in the pen that has his 7. He spends the whole day going between the 2 groups. I´m hoping that when I release the tinies that they´ll either make up one big flock (gander + 3 females + 11 goslings), or that he´ll stick with his goose and the other two will look after their 4. However, I think the first thing will happen, as these 3 geese are all sisters, and are bonded. Next year they´ll have their own ganders....that´ll mean a lot more ganders, but I´m hoping that things will go fairly quietly, due to their natures (very cotton-patch-like in this).

Sounds like a great group of geese. Never having geese before and having an opportunity to swap some Scovy egg for a goose egg we took the plunge, even with Sam changing personality when getting close to breeding season he is super special and I hope he will be here along time. Most of the time he is pretty laid back. But I really don't think he'd tolerate another gander even if we had another goose. I'm not sure about geese but I think it takes along time for genetic problems to surface in waterfowl from inbreeding. Missy on the other hand after 15 months is still skittish she didn't have that prime human contact when she was hatched for her first 4 months so even though she will eat out of my hand she isn't as friendly as Sam or my ducks that have hatched here. But she has come a long way.

Well, I do know that muscovies can interbreed without too much problem, but as I don´t know the history of my geese, there´s no way of knowing if they´ve been already interbreeding for some time or not. Going by the fertility rate of the eggs..100%, it looks ok.
Having said that, I do know that there have been closed flocks of geese in isolated areas that have just continued to increase in number, all the same family, which is, of course, how different breeds came about in the first place. So I´ll just hope that all´s ok and if I find a suitable female I´ll get her, and meanwhile I´ll see what happens with the cross-breeding the auto gander with the mixes, as they have the spot-gene and could produce some interesting birds. It does seem that this mix has produced pieds with the pied goose, and in this latest lot of a white goose I have some saddle-backs and some dilutes, looking at the way they´re marked, but I´ll have to wait until they´re fully feathered to find out. This may also help me to figure out what my mixes are, to a degree. They´re all gorgeous anyway.

And on the subject of Missy, I reckon she won´t be as skittish as the grey females I have, and they both got used to me picking up their babies (the 6). (last year they were terrible, as they´d just come from the farm, but this year they´re much easier) I can go out there now, and go straight up to the youngsters and pick them up, and the mom just hisses a bit, but nothing more, and the youngsters don´t worry about it.

Miss Lydia, how are Sam and Missy doing? Nice to see you!
