Toulouse Geese Thread

I forgot to ask earlier. Has anyone had any luck with or put their goose in a diaper in the house? I'm getting 2 girls and was thinking put 1 out with my Roman tufted gander so he leaves my poor ducks alone and keep one girl in the house as a sort of therapy animal since I have panic attacks and few other problems that I've found are eased by my pets. My gander helps ease them when I can catch him. (He's not the tamest) I want one of the girls to be an indoor goose and tame like go in the car and places with me if possible. Anyone have any luck with diapers or finding a decent priced place that sells them? I'm not crafty so making them myself would be a disaster! Lol sorry this is so long!
Your not talking about putting a gosling out with your gander right off I hope? once the goslings are fully feathered or if it's nice an warm then around 3 weeks start introducing him to them very slowly so they have time to bond with him and he them. Put your gander in time out in his own pen. then he'll leave your ducks alone. as for a house goose I recc a dog they are wonderful therapy animals, geese are flock animals and do so much better if they are with their own, some do have house geese but getting 2 goslings they will be imprinted on each other and it would be very sad to split them up. I look at my flock as therapy but I have to enjoy them outside where they are happiest. Oh and my gander was a wonderful papa goose to my ducklings that hatched here and also to the 2 goslings we had last year. but you can't just put them all together and hope they get along ganders can step on babies too I lost 1 duckling when my gander accidentally stepped on it.

Oh goodness no! They will not be together (the gander and geese) until they much older! My gander and my ducks and chickens free range so the goslings will be put in their own run until everyone gets along well and is old enough to be left on their own. I won't be splitting the girls up after a lot more research. As far as getting a dog. I'm not a much of a dog person and I find it hard to get attached to them. Where barnyard birds I can. (Strange I know. But I am a strange person :) ) As far as Stellar and the ducks. He only goes after one particular female and she doesn't seem to mind him and his advances. Lol he is closely watched so he doesn't hurt the duck. He ignores the chickens completely.

MY gander who was hatched by a Muscovy duck lived with only ducks and chickens till he was 5.5 yrs old mated with the Muscovy's never hurt one, Now if you have small ducks there could be a problem but My Muscovy drakes weigh 12-15 lbs and their Muscovy ducks weigh 4-6 lbs so big difference. My Embden gander probably weighs 20lb.
I hope you can find some species of animal that you would feel comfortable with that can help. Some people keep larger in door birds like Parrots and they take them every where with them.

I would be really surprised to see a gander (or goose for that matter) being able to be socialized to the point that they would make a good companion/therapy animal. By their very nature geese are extremely cautious and react, sometimes aggressively, to any change in their environment. This is not a bad thing it is just the way they are. And, it does not mean that it could not be done but I think it might not be to the well being of the goose as it would require they go completely against their nature.

Yay my 1st goose egg! Too bad it was laid last night and froze

I'm thinking I may have 3 geese and 1 gander...is that too many girlfriends for one boy?
Sadly it seems that geese lay late at night and into the early a.m. so, if you have freezing weather there is a pretty good chance the eggs will freeze this time of year. As for your gender mix, it should be no problem. He will probably bond more tightly with one but may also mate with all three. If not, the two remaining females will form a companion bond and "all will be right with the world". Note though: if he mates with all three and all three lay eggs there may be a slight chance he may steal the eggs and give them to his primary mate. That or he may kidmap any goslings and give them to his primary mate. So, you may need to keep watch and be prepared to move the "single" females into an area of their own with their nests. Also, if that does happen, you might want to consider getting a male for the others at some point.

My ducks are rouens (sp?) Stellar is about 15-20 lbs right now. I'm terrified of birds that are not barnyard birds. Ie: chickadees, blue jays, canaries and finches etc. I had one peck at me and got me by my eye when I was little and ever since "little" birds scare the bajeebers out of me! Chickens and stuff are fine as I've grown up with them.

I had a wren stuck in the chicken coop this morning have no idea why all feeders are out side but it was so cute I opened the big door and it flew away.
I use to be scared of geese after an encounter at a marina with some but I got over it when I got ducks and next thing I knew I was wanting geese. So maybe you can get over your fear too. I put out feeders to feed the wild birds to keep them out of my flocks feeders.

We feed all the wild birds that want to stop by for a snack. Little sparrows seem fond of spending the night in with our Ducks but they will settle for the chickens if they have no choice. We go through about the equilivant of a gallon of wild bird seed a day but it is worth it to have the sounds and be able to sit and watch them. In the spring and summer into fall we have Purple Martins that nest on the side of the house. They are great, they feed in flight and keep insects at a minimum.

I sure enjoy them too jtn. they always have brought me joy just sitting and watching them then when they bring their babies to the feeders wow that is really cool.
