Toulouse Geese Thread

It does sound like you have the same problem!

I have one more solution I may try. I have a smaller pasture next to the dog and close to the pond. That small pasture is part of the geese comfort zone. They were actually raised in there before they got bigger and wise enough to go under the fence. I may goose proof that fence so that they can't get in with the dog anymore but they can access the pond. Hopefully that will work. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
@dianneS if your planning on eggs and goslings then I hope for their protection and protection for the eggs and goslings you'll have a secure house for your geese.

My goose started laying , first time ever, 5 days ago.
Beautiful eggs for 3 days then yesterday no egg as of 6 pm when I put them in goose house for the night.
This morning I have 2 eggs - not in nest - and no shell only leathery skin almost transparent.
I attached a picture.
I'm assuming they need calcium but they have been eating matsuri waterfowl so I would think it had everything ?????
I bought oyster shell grit today ( they had the granite grit prior) and chicken layer pellets. Which they now have both in their house. I also feed spring mix greens to them everyday that the ground is snow covered.
What am I doing wrong. !!!!! :(....
I'm so afraid one of these soft eggs will break inside of my goose and she'll die .
What do I do , please help us.

I've seen them too and they are worrisome. They may need extra calcium right now in the form of Oyster shell so you did the right thing in getting them some. But sometimes these soft shell eggs can happen when they first begin to lay and it works out on it's own. The granite grit is not going to help with calcium so it's good you got the oyster shell. granite grit is for them to use to help chew up their feed etc. that they eat when it goes into their crops. You may see a few more of these and you may not just depends on how long it takes from all her parts for making an egg get straightened out.

What if it breaks inside ????
Do they die? do I need a vet visit ?
Do I understand correctly , you have seen these in your geese this year ?????
My goose hasn't started laying yet. But i saw some when my Buff duck started to lay last year and it worried me alot. I have always kept out oyster shell so I had that covered but I did add to their drinking water calcium citrate [human] a couple times a week for about a month and now she is fine. It can happen when they begin to lay first time or even after they haven't laid for a while and start back up laying. Or it can be something else.

Thankfully over the years I have had ducks- chickens and geese I haven't had one die from a soft shell breaking inside of them. Not saying it couldn't happen though. But hopefully this is just going to work itself out with your goose and she'll be fine. She is acting okay right?

I am still waiting on my goose to lay her first egg of the year, she'll be 5 yrs old in April.

I think they are acting ok. They changed personalities when the eggs started coming. One goose is very vocal the other has gotten quiet or pouty acting. I don't know who is laying , I haven't caught one in the nest yet , just the eggs.
Both are eating though.

My female has been walking around mumbling this whole day today. I have no idea what that means. lol But yes once the begin to brood and lay they do change quite a bit thankfully once breeding season is over they pretty much mellow out again. Unless of course they have goslings.

for you. Unfortunately the situation I have is if the ducks are at the tank, they are outside of the LGD perimeter = protected from the puppies (actually barely 6 mos old here) but not protected from other predators (snapping turtles, coyotes, etc.)

The tank is not a safe place for ours. I try to keep the turtles under control and pray the Muscovy will fly back and forth but the ones walking are at risk.

That's about the only solution. Our eggs laid in the duck houses and babies hatched there are safe. The houses are the only place the puppies can't get when they are not penned up.

@equustears
I have a Pekin that lays these quite often and has for years. I think I read somewhere it can be from over mating also

My ducks have free choice Oyster Shell but it still happens. I can't say I've ever seen a Pekin eating the OS though so occasionally I put some in their crumbles. She's fine otherwise.

When a goose starts to lay, she will have a few weird eggs. Its normal. I have seen shell-less eggs in every type of bird we keep, even quail. If the egg breaks inside the mother, she may or may not have an issue, depends on her health and immunity. Take a deep breath, and just keep an eye on the laying birds. If they seem off, not eating, drinking or co-mingling then she may be in trouble. Broody birds may only leave a nest once a day. If she hasn't. make her get up! I will pick up my girl and take her to food and water.

Hi Johny2000
The last 2 eggs were no shell. Almost transparent and like a leathery skin holding the insides.
Both are eating and drinking . They just don't stay together like they used to since the eggs started coming.
I will watch them . Thank you for your response and help.
