I totally know what you're saying -- I try real hard to avoid licensed-character toys or clothing for my kids, and it is HARD. (Well, except that the 4 yr old is nuts about cars, so we got him the animated movie Cars dvd last christmas, and since then he has, er, accumulated a certain amount of Cars characters stuff
). It is terrible how brand-recognition consumerism is pushed so early
Thrift stores often have good (sometimes excellent) condition older toys (and clothes) that aren't advertising anything at all <g>.
Also there is a lot you (or the kids) can make, from fabric scraps, cardboard boxes, well-sanded scrap wood, etc etc.
