We've had some hawks and even eagles circling the property, sending me out in a huff to protect my chickens! I found them hiding under our lilac bushes, which are huge and overgrown. It's like a city under there! Our dog helps keep things like coyotes away, and maybe even the birds of prey, but having good hiding spots for the chickens is helpful - bushes, under the porch, in the garage - we keep the garage door open just enough for the chickens to get in for this very reason - etc. I have seen our rooster come out and confront a group of wild turkeys while the hens hid under the lilac. When I came out and called them, they all came running, including the rooster, and stood behind me! Of course, the turkeys weren't much of a danger.
As for toys, nothing is funnier than watching chickens eat spaghetti noodles. We had hens running away with mouthfuls of noodles hanging from their beaks...absolutely hilarious!!!
