Tracking my chicken journey

Had a attack on my chickens this past week.
Some animal ( Thinking maybe a cat ) was able to reach their paw right through the chicken wire and into the run at 3 different points and killed 3 of my chicks.

I lost my black copper Maran, lavender Orpington, and cream legbar.

To keep anything from being able to stick their paw in again I bought the 3 ft, 1/4 inch hardware mesh from Home Depot and set it up all around the exterior base of the run.
Should have done this sooner but live and learn.

I am not the handiest guy so I threw together this fence around it and bought some chickens from Tractor Supply… 7 sex links and 3 barred rocks.
My kids loved them and everything was great until a raccoon climbed in one night and turned it into a massacre… Thankfully I made the gruesome discovery and not the kids.
Hot pepper trick I use ghost peppers you take the hottest peppers you can get your hands on and crush them especially the seeds put it around your coop and run and the ground predators won't go past the pepper line

Spent this weekend preparing the area in my lower yard where I will be assembling my Omlet brand chicken coop with walk in run next weekend. Spent this weekend making a retaining wall and then filled it in with dirt and mulch. I had 5 yards of top soil and 7 1/2 yards of red fir mulch dropped on my driveway on Friday.
Next weekend I will finally actually be assembling the chicken coop and run for the 10 bantam chicks that I currently have waiting in my garage.

It looks amazing! In April I will have had one full year with our 4 chickens and is been a learning experience, mostly good. One thing I never read in all my research was that chickens eat grass … roots and all. But I am working out that problem now and will re landscaping my backyard to make it both chicken and people friendly. Before chickens I had a beautiful yard with a clover lawn and lots of flowers. Fast forward this spring I have a yard of MUD lol but I will never give up my chickens. It’s the best hobby ever Do enjoy the journey Below are two videos of my spring yard and what happens when you let your chickens take selfies with you lol oh and the black garbage bags keep the hawk away

2nd coop and run almost completely set up now. This one is for my bantam chickens. I have another weekend or two of work before it is completely done. It is an Omlet brand and I am really content that I went this route. Looks great and will compliment my landscape nicely.

Beautification of the area is still an ongoing process but my backyard Chicken Mecca is coming together better then envisioned. Added a few bantams to the new coop.
