Tractor Supply Employee Knowledge About Chicks

Cant believe I found this thread. I was just thinking of these very things about TSC yesterday!

When they 1st put their chick bins out, I asked what breeds they would get. A girl said "Cornish rock, Reds, Bantams". I asked if they would get any bantam cochins? She said "Uh, is that a kind of chicken"?

What ticks me off about my TSC is, they havent had any bantams in yet and no one knows when they will come in. Every time I have asked they tell me they dont know when they will get them, they just get a call to come pick them up. I call them every single day to see if they have come in, no one knows when they will get them.

My kids drove me crazy about getting some of the chicks they got in today so I decided fine, get some. We had been standing there at the chick bins for at least 15 mins with ppl that work there walking by many times. My daughter had to go ask someone to help us. No one bothered to ask if were needed any.....

And, as another poster mentioned, 6 chick minimum is stupid. My original chicks came from the feedstore in the next larger city closest to me (we dont have an actual feed store) and they were only $2.00, all pullets, breeds separated, guys that knew which was which and what was what.

And I agree with other posters, if you are going to do a job, know something about it..

And in reference to Walmart, at least if I ask where something is there, if a person doesnt know, they have always gone looking for me.....or asked someone else if they knew.

Our TSC isnt bad really. We give them alot of business. However, we didnt buy any chicks from them.
All there bins were straight run.

There are a few ppl up there that know about chicks- no one has a clue about the ducklings.
One guy up there, who knows us fairly well said he didnt have a problem selling us less than 6. And that the sign was there to discourage uneducated people from buying chicks, just because they are so cute/fuzzy/etc.

Funny stories ya'll keep them coming

Some jurisdictions have laws that stores can't sell chicks for displays or as pets. The minimums are to stop idiots from getting one or two for their kids at Easter just to let them die. Many of the TSC stores misunderstand the laws and misapply minimums.

Oh boy.

Amazing how ingorant TSC employee's can be.

I'm currently in the market for a job and have decided to put a application into TSC and if I get the job I'll ask if I could help take care of the chicks.

Because I saw at least 3 or 4 dead chicks in the 3 bins and when I told the employee behind the desk who was in charge of online shipping orders he just looked, "Huh?" If I get the job I'm going to make sure that if there are NO dead chicks in there and maybe can help the customers what chicks they want. I know some breeds but not all of the breeds of chicks in the bins. And I know the difference between chicks and ducklings. One of the employee's didn't even know which were ducklings and which were chicks!!

These stories are funny. I just went yesterday, I needed a light to candle the eggs, I figure well they sell incubators well not those. The reply I got is " You can really do that? Why would want to look in an egg" They tried to sell me a reptile heat lamp! lol

Then when I first started chickens, I admit I was one of those woman who was gonna buy them for her kid as a pet, Not Easter though! I figured well if it worked we would have egg layers. But I had no idea the difference between a standard and a bantman. I asked the girl and she said it is a different type thats all, one is like a fancy breed. I though ok. I got the bantys. Of course I fell in love learned all I could that day on chickens to find out a banty is a little bird. lol I did go back a couple of days later to buy more, but I had an idea on what I was doing.

And just so you know these are not kids, the kids seem to do the register at my ts. The funny thing is when they hire they want experince, but how come when you go in for an item they have no idea what you are talking about!

I still go there, I just make sure I know what I am looking for, because I know I cannot count on any body there.

I discovered a TSC about 22 miles away, went to it for something specific (horse stall mat to cover the floor of the coop I'm building) and it was a couple weeks before chick season there. The signs were up, but when I asked some questions about which hatchery supplied the store, even the floor manager - who had that I'm A Floor Manager And I know Stuff demeanor - tried to find some literature laying around to answer that question. Could I order some chicks? Yes, but not less than 50 or so.

HUH? Obviously better to wait until Chick Days and see what came in....

Anyway, I already have my favorite feed store and its employees are wonderful. Plus, the chick and duckling selection is amazing.

I just wanted to check out TSC.... feed is slightly cheaper, but only Purina and one other brand, neither of which was what I had been sold at the feed store.

But I did get the horse stall mat I wanted. And a double shepherd's hook for hanging plants, plus some small, toy chicken figurines to put on a shelf in my cubicle at work. ;-)

I haven't been back. If I ever need another horse stall mat, though.....

I stopped in our TSC to get crumbles and looked in on the chick/duck bins which where large metal water troughs. They did have heat lamps for the smaller chicks but the bins where so crowded the poor babies couldn't even move! I left there feeling very sad!

It's hard for any employee to know everything about every product in their store. Our store (not TSC) has training and certifications for employees to take. Some training is mandatory, but the certifications are not. The employee must make the effort themselves. Managers must be certified, so there is always one person in the store with proper basic knowledge on the animals. Resources are always available to employees and customers alike, easily accessible right next to the animals in question. Proper animal care while in the store is something that is enforced strongly and takes priority over anything else. Even if that means walking away from a customer to take care of an issue with an animal.

Product knowledge is something different. Only one pet food company actively requires training, but I personally would not recommend their product. Another has a rep. that educates about his products and knows a lot about many other brands. Other than that I can only really recommend based on my own experiences and research (which is a lot, for my own animals benefit). I can recommend products x or y for this situation or that situation. But I can't tell you the ingredient list of all the foods in the store or everything about every other product. I can show you where they are and help you understand the labels.

If you are bringing a living creature into your home, you should at least do some research. I've made impulse purchases, like most, but immediately did the research on proper care. I also believe if a store has living creatures, they should at the very least have employees with the knowledge to properly care for them in the store and care sheets for the customers.

Not all employees that deal with fish, try misinform and sell the wrong thing. Way too many people choose to disregard any advice and do what they want. They don't care, they want what they want and want it now.
