Yeah, I called the egg producer and their sales rep told me that they came from rock rhode island crosses. I assume that means they used a production red hen and a white rock roo. However, one of the chicks has a black spot on its back, which looks more like a california leghorn to me. Perhaps they used a leghorn roo instead? Who knows. So far all of them are feathering out white.

well its day 19 and lockdown for the 4 safeway eggs that made it this far!!!

@sequoia, they're sooo cute

yep, that's the box. And one of them actually came out just now. amazing how fast they zip sometimes! This little guy was from the upper egg in the previous picture. 2 others still in pip mode and 1 is about to zip. Hoping for more colors but based on yours, i think they're all gonna be the same. Still so darn cute though

Why would you want to hatch eggs from a grocery store? I guess as something to do. Looks like Trader Joe birds are mostly Leghorn and there is nothing special about that. Strange they would keep a rooster with their hens for commercial egg production. The low hatch rate is probably from washing the eggs prior to sale. Hatching eggs shouldn't be washed. And refrigeration probably doesn't help either. We don't have a Trader Joe around here but I can't imagine a store legally selling eggs without refrigeration . I wouldn't want to eat those eggs.
