Why all the cynicism? I think there's something neat about giving a wonderful life to a peep that originated from parents kept in horrible factory farm conditions. I also beg to differ on your statement that there is nothing special about the Trader Joe's Leghorns. They make wonderful rangers on the pasture, where their flighty disposition is actually a plus, as opposed to say, a Production Red or Barred Rock that's constantly underfoot and squawking for a handout.

I agree, i was going to say something earlier, but then i decided not too, but trully theres no need for a debbie downer here, this is an exciting thread an i agree with leneige homme

When I woke up this morning and saw this thread highlighted in the BYC newsletter, I couldn't stop reading until I finished all 15 pages of posts.

Very interesting and entertaining! ... except for one recent post by someone who might not understand the adventuresome nature of all of you hatchaholics.

Currently, I have been hatching my own babies out of some mixed standard-sized hens, whose daddy is a banty buff cochin...they've all inherited his feathered feet.

But I will certainly enjoy reading about this ongoing science project. Love it!

Why would anyone want 16 dogs and 10 cats??

There are 6 billion people in the world, so what is it that makes *you* special? (rhetorical question - do you get my point?)

Oh, and in addition to what I already posted above....

I don't have any chickens at all. Let alone have hatched one. So I think even if it's an 'ordinary, common, dime-a-dozen leghorn' as your post implies - well, I think that would make it pretty darn special to me!

Loosen up and have a great day! Gotta go build another coop!

I am blown away! I've never heard of hatching grocery store egg, let alone thought about trying it. You hatchaholics are great! One question, why are these eggs fertilized? I wouldn't think there would be roosters around. (Sorry if this question is a repeat, I didn't read every single page).

Our nearby IGA has just started to carry local eggs...they look like the brown eggs I get from my layer pen. I am have tempted to fork out the 4.00 they want for a dozen and give it a shot. I have earned my nickname honestly!

Having read that statement, I googled to find closest TJs to me and called to specifically ask if that store carried fertilized eggs. Yup.

Soooo..... if none of the 7 shipped eggs currently incubating in my Brinsea Mini Advance hatch as hoped on 8/6, my second attempt will be with Trader Joe eggs.

Thank you for mentioning that, Willowbrook!

We incubated Trader Joe eggs in March, along with a random assortment from the local farmer's market as well as the Half Moon Bay Feed & Fuel. Two of the Trader Joe's eggs did hatch - but unfortunately, they have both turned out to be roosters. Our mystery mix flock has compounded the challenge of sorting the roosters from the hens, but now that the roosters have begun crowing we're figuring it out. No eggs yet.
