We don't have them at our TJs either (north of you), but I figured a co-op would. We certainly have a few of those to try.

And someone said they found some at Wal-mart???? Craziness.

Has anyone had a hen go broody over non-fertile eggs, then just swaped them for store-bought fertile ones and let her hatch them?

So you are telling me that certain stores offer fertile eggs? And ya'll are getting chicks from these? Who knew?

Good idea, I've got a Whole Foods and a PCC near me... I'll definitely try there. I'm finishing up my homemade bator this week and I could use some test eggs to throw in there! I'm a little hesitant though because I'm worried about finding homes for the babies... I don't have room to keep them right now

Yep, I've seen them in Whole Foods, too.

Gryeyes recently hatched 3 little cuties from some Trader Joe eggs on New Year's Day. We got our first bator a few weeks ago and went right out and tried hatching grocery store eggs.... started out well, developed veins, then died and got STEEEENKY in the bator overnight! We have a larger bator now (hehehe how'd that happen?) and are going to try some grocery store eggs again in a few months.

I have another Trader Joes chick that hatched a little over a week ago by one of my broodies. She started on wooden eggs, and then when I was sure she was committed to her brooding, I gave her 3 TJ eggs to try to hatch. Only one egg started to develop out of the 3. I candled around day 5 to check.

The chick is a sweet little pullet. The mama is very proud and caring of her one little baby. Now I know she will probably take good care of expensive eggs when the time comes.

Eggscellent!

I have four, now; I set another dozen a week after the first dozen, and one developed enough to hatch. I THINK I have 3 pullets and a roo. Right now they are called Eenie, Mimi, Mynie and Moe.
