Trader Joes & Other Grocery Store Egg Hatching Club - Are you a Member

Pretty happy news! I candled tonight and it appears that eight out of the 12 are developing for sure! Three are maybes - difficult to see much because of their porous shells - and one is a clear. I know you had some quitters with this brand, right, Gabrielle? I will recandle in a week and post the results!

The seven TJ's that hatched last week are doing fine! I have to get the camera out and learn how to post photos here. Skittish little babies, right from the start, but I hear that's normal for leghorns.

One has a bent-back foot, but we're trying the band-aid-on-cardboard trick for a few days.

That's really cool, ellandeeranch! They are skittish, but my first batch of Leghorns were my first chickens, and I only got two pullets from that hatch, so I spent a lot of time with them, and they're such loves! One does this really funny, I swear, nazi like stomp of her feet then crouches whenever I approach her. It makes me laugh every time! I can pick her up and hug her etc.., the other one doesn't do that, she is definitely the top pullet / hen, but she does come to me and always wants to peck at my shoes, shoelaces, pants and hands! If I grab her she lets me pick her up without any fuss, I can hug her, etc... but she'll be happy when I let her go, whereas I really think flutters, the funny one, likes her hugs and kisses.

Ok, I'm a crazy chicken lady, LOL. I know you wouldn't want a chicken to hug, but I find it fun

Welcome chookchik! What kind of hens/rooster do you have that you will be hatching from? Leave your refrigerated eggs out at room temperature for a day with the carton open (to avoid condensation on the eggs) before you set them. That will give you time to adjust your incubator as well to make sure it's holding the temp.
Hi Chick4chix,

I have a silkie/cochin roo and hen and three production reds. It's the silkie/cochin's that are currently incubating. I kept them at room temp, got my incubator all sorted out, got some great advice from someone else on the board who raises silkies and cochins. My temps and humidity are holding steady and I am going to candle tonight to see if there are signs of life.
I'll try to get a picture of my set up shortly.

Cheers!

Alrighty. I thought you all would be interested in getting an update on my Whole Foods chicks. They've grown quite a bit!

Godzilla: Is growing more like a meat bird. He's very heavy, and is excessively slow to feather. Very obviously a roo from his comb.

Unnamed: Our second obvious roo. He has remained all white

Unnamed: Has a lot of comb growth, but no color in it so far. She/he has actually developed a little patch of dark feathers on the back.

Dotty: Alll dotted up, and pretty obviously female so far (yay!) Cute as a button.

I'm giggling at the "stamp her feet" part of the greeting by crouching.". That's called "the squat" and many hens will stamp like that. The squat means she considers you her rooster. She's submitting to you.

I still think it's adorable when any of my hens squat for me. I have roosters, so it's not as often as it used to be. They're too busy squatting for the boys!
