Day 6 and I couldn't resist candling my eggs. Two clear sloshy ones/ Three that have veins and the darkest three eggs look like blobs. Not bad for a beginner. At least something is trying to grow. LOL

Has anyone grown out and used their TJ roos for breeding? I have mine over EE hens, but he has turned into a very obnoxious rooster. He crows nonstop and is starting to attack people. I really want to cross him with my young olive egger pullet for fertile eggs but I don't know if I can stand him that long. Anyone else have experience with these boys? My boy is living on barrowed time.:he

Sorry, I processed mine soon after they started crowing.

Sometimes cockerels will settle down after their hormones stop raging.

I am looking to do this for the Easter hatch a long. I am hoping to possibly get quail eggs. Anybody seen quail eggs at TJ?

Also on whole foods' website they have info about what the stuff means on the egg cartons (organic, cage free, etc.) and one of the terms that was on the website was "fertile". They explained it as a flock with hens and Roos. If it's a term explained on their website... they must sell fertile eggs!

Yes, Whole Foods sells fertile eggs in Davis California. I hatched a bunch of them for the NYD Hatch a long.

O.K. Looks like I have 17 out of 48 eggs that looked good when I candled them. I accidentally cracked one of the 48 but that still leaves 30 bad eggs. Normally that would seem pretty dismal but these are eggs from the grocery store and I did transport them all the way from Tucson, AZ to Chattanooga, TN both flying and driving. Anyhow, at least it wasn't a total bust like last time. I made sure not to X-Ray the eggs at the airport. One thing I love about these white eggs is how easy it is to candle them.

Looks like I'm probably only going to get 7 chicks. Out of the 48 I had 17 candle well but they started to pip a full day after the last of my chicks from my own eggs had hatched. So basically they hatched on day 23 (old eggs do take longer) but I'm guessing the refrigeration also effected these eggs negatively. I had to pull my other chicks out before these TJ eggs started to hatch because some of them had hatched out the evening of day 20. I threw some hot, microwaved wet paper towels in there to get the humidity back up quickly and it seemed to work. None of the other eggs seemed to have pipped except for one with a dead chick in it.

The TJ chicks are the white-yellow ones. The hatch rate of the eggs that candled as good was less than 50% while with my own eggs only a few didn't hatch and that might have been a candleing error (which is not likely with those easy white eggs from TJ's).

Well, I went ahead and cracked all the eggs open. There were no pips or chirping eggs so I figured it was safe. I actually did mis-candle a TJ's egg so out of 16 eggs I had 7 hatch and 9 that were either fully or almost fully developed but failed to hatch. In contrast I had 5 of my eggs that were similarly developed that did not hatch but hatched out 37.
