I wanted the best results, so I opted ONLY for the carton(s) marked "fertile." Those were only in the white eggs.

thank you, i also want the best results so i guess i will check whole foods for fertile brown. if i cant find any then i wont hatch any this time around.

New hatching from WF fertile eggs. The eggs came from Rock Island Egg Farm in CA. This is the only success though. One pipped and never finished hatching. The others were either infertile or aren't hatching - now day 22 or 23, I forget.

Thanks.

I cracked open the remaining six eggs. (The other four were deemed infertile at 11 days). They all had partially-to-mostly formed chicks inside, so I guess my immature candling skills were accurate. Now I just wonder if I did anything wrong or if they were just too mishandled/old to properly grow.

I've gone through this thread quite a bit, and done a search, but have found nothing about Nucal Barnstar Free Range Fertile eggs. Found them on the Nucal website, and I emailed the company, asking where to find them, but no reply yet after almost 2 weeks and 2 emails. Anyone in Northern CA seen them in the store, or tried hatching them?
We are currently incubating our 2nd round of Rock Island (Petaluma, CA) eggs, and looking for other possible breeds.

I decided to join along the 3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch and had my mail-order Marans eggs in the cooling room (casita). At awakening today I went to bring them into the house to warm up to room temperature before setting at noon -- (VH1 booming voiceover) -- "And then tragedy struck..." In my eagerness I must've grasped the egg carton a little too tightly because I heard -- and felt -- the subtle *crunch* of an egg under my finger.

"Awwww....@#$@!" I had already submitted my tally of 32 eggs and was decidedly (and drippily) down one. What to do?

"Have no fear; TJ's is near!" A scant 15 minutes later I was bypassing the 332 date-stamped eggs for the 340 ones on the back of the shelf. I brought the carton home and did an eenie-meenie-minie-mo on which was the lucky egg. The Sesame Street song kept drumming through my head... "One of these things is not like the other. One of these things doesn't belong..."

DH wandered through the kitchen at this time and I relayed my tale of misadvernture. He has nicknamed the egg "Token" (and if it hatches, that name undoubtedly will stick). Not very PC, I know. But we watch a lot of "South Park."

Will keep everyone posted...... Setting in half an hour....
