Yes, one can quickly be overwhelmed with chicken math! Ugh! LOL
Tell me about it. Once I discovered the miracle of incubating eggs.................

I now have 200+ chickens...

I don't want to count the actual number

Tomorrow is the grand opening of the Trader Joe's in my area. I think I'm going to go see if they are stocking fresh fertile eggs and pick up a dozen to see if I can get some to hatch.

I just did my first hatch from purchased eggs that were questionable on what was done with them after the hen laid them ( I answered a craigslist ad from a questionable person).. At least with TJ's I know they have been in the fridge and possibly not hard boiled :) LOL....

I have some fertile eggs coming in November that I'm really looking forward to and want to make sure I got my incubator good and dialed in.

That was my reason for hatching my first batch of eggs, Trader Joe eggs, because I wanted to get expensive eggs but wanted to try out the incubator I made first. It turned out well (5/8 ended up hatching, one died after pipping, one no go, one blood ring) Anyway, i thought the hens would be really great to have for eggs.

Problem is, I really should have culled the roosters before they got so old (soon as I could tell ~ 3 weeks) because I can't keep them, they're disturbing my neighbors (well, they will if I put them outside in the coop tomorrow) and nobody wants them. They're not fancy and I don't even know if fancy roosters would be taken in by anyone around here either. And of course now we're fond of the old boys.

I've always wanted chickens, grew up taking care of animals, but that was a hundred years ago! When hubby said, "no... we can find them a home, let them live"... Ugh! I didn't want to do it, so I thought, Ok, we'll find someone to take them (though my head said no you won't) Now we have serious problems. I just want to give you guys heads up. Deal with your roos, if you're in the city and can't keep the roosters ;) Chicken rearing and culling go hand in hand, unless you have endless land, or you just let them roam night and day and let the predators take them?? It's a lot easier when they're chicks, believe me!

Well, just venting my current problems which I created myself.

I got some eggs from new frontiers market in flagstaff, funny i sent an email(had website with nice description of good eggs and practices) to(Chino Valley Ranchers in ca.) They were very reponsive and told me the day the eggs would be there. The store normally didnt have the fertilized eggs, but all kinds of different ones from these folks. They are very big brown eggs,im hoping for some sort of sex link chicks.I would have been happy with leghorns also.So i have 10 in my bator and i stuck two under my bantam to see if she well hatch them. I also put quail eggs in my bator, first time for that also! Preety exciting!

Cluck Cluck, yes Roosters arent easy to get rid of,funny the local feed place had three in boxs to give away, grown. Be careful about having those roosters run free by your property.Hawks and eagles well keep showing up for a meal. You might consider Rooster frying time?depends on how old they are.I told my kids if times were tougher i would have taken all the roosters for food.
Mine are in a small greenhousewith an electric fence,we have just about every predator you can imagine where i live.

Wow...My kids keep insisting that fertile eggs from the grocery store can be hatched but I didn't believe them because I though the refrigeration would kill them. I am for sure going to try this if one of our hens goes broody.

We had a great deal on local eggs in our discount grocery a few weeks back (3 dozen multi colored X LARGE for $3.99). Most where very dark brown some where speckled and there were even two blue eggs in the batch I bought. I got them to make deviled eggs for a potluck because our fresh eggs are to hard to peel...it turned out the these eggs where not only fertile they pretty fresh too and I ended up making egg salad!
