Tragedy today....

Wow! what a reminder that we are all just one moment away from a potential tragedy. I pride myself on being careful and safety conscious, just like you do, but things do fail sometimes in spite of all our efforts. I am so sorry you had the loss and scare and thankful you were home to handle it immediately. Timing is everything, right? Did you only have the two chicks in the brooder? did you save others?

I am so grateful you both are safe and sound.

Oh hun! i am sorry about the babes- yes i have had those bulbs come apart- i will check on the other ones you mentioned- so they don't hurt the chicks eyes? give hugs to grandma and daughter!!!

I hope people take away more than the warning about the red bulbs. Your daughter had a fire extinquisher handy. Come on people raise your hands IF you have any extinguishers in/around your coops, bators, etc. Time to go and get some. Just about everything around chickens is very flammable- as bad as it is to loose chicks, you don't want to lose family /home either.

We appreciate everyone's hugs and concerns so very much.

Yes, Diva...I do hope that everyone thinks about getting and keeping fire extinguishers in your coop and brooder areas. I will tell you that without the fire extinguisher, my daughter's house would have likely gone up in flames. She keeps one in the kitchen, one in the laundry room and two near the wood stove which is at the center of the house. She grabbed one of the ones by the wood stove.

Another thing she mentioned. She really didn't know how to work it and it took her a few seconds to figure out how to pull the pin and which button to push. So be sure to familiarize yourself with how they work.

Another thing.... If you can always remember this... RACE.... Rescue any person or animal if possible; Alarm - scream, yell, call 911 if necessary; Confine - if the fire is small as it was in the brooder, confine it just to that area. Pull anything flammable away from the flame and if you have to leave the fire, close the door behind you; Extinguish - use appropriate means of extinguishing the flame, always pointing the extinguisher at the bottom of the flame.
