tragic death yesterday....

I have made the decision to give my remaining "babies" to a 4-h'r that will provide them more love and time than I have been able to. It is a hard decision - I love my ducks and I want what is best for them.

Thank you all for the concern and support that you have shown to be during the past year as a "duck mom". Maybe again one day - when I can stay home and lavish them with time and treats - and a more secure shelter.

Even though I don't really understand giving up your babies, it just seems like something that would leave you even more empty

...but my heart goes out to you, that must have been one strong attachment you had to her, I hope things work out for the better. I have no doubt the 4h'r will give them a warm and loving home.

I was very attached to her and to find her that way....I can't bear the thought of that happening again. I know this young man will love them as much as I do - he definately has a heart for the waterfowl. He isn't new to them - so they are going to a better place - alive and thriving....

We don't normally have coyotes, and no dogs - we do have an occasional coon, but they don't ever bother the ducks. My neighbor said they have been seeing a fox in the fields....

Could very well have been a possum too. Theyre a bit more agile, sneaky and quicker(sometimes) than a fox.. Have you seen any possums out? I grew up in East Texas and had family out in Arkansas, and they had big problems with possums going after their flocks.. But I am so sorry for your loss. These birds tend to grow on us like adopted children.
