Trashy dogs!

I have a neighbor who has three dogs. I grew up liking dogs until I got chickens. I have one dog that belongs to my baby girl that stays in my yard and she is well behaved in a contained area. The neighbors dogs however are allowed to roam at will and impregnate whoever they see fit. This past week they decided to have a little fun with my two best chickens and see if they could sling them around like rag dolls by their necks. The chickens had no choice but to play along. Unfortunately my wife and I were not there when this all happened. I could have condoned it if the dogs were hungry and needed a meal, but they left the chickens in the neighbors yard with the necks snapped. I ended up burying my poor hens and hating the neighbors dog. I guess when I rebuild the coop I will make it a Fort Knox of a coop, although as large as these pit bulls are, it may not make any difference in the long run. My neighbor is obviously blissfully unaware that he harbors such trashy animals on his property. My favorite Australorp and Red Sex Link RIP..:hit
I lost 14 of my 26 chickens to neighborhood dogs. They were huskies. They climbed the perimeter fence to get in my yard and killed all the chickens they could find A friend next door saw them and by the time she got there to chase the dogs away it was too late. These dogs also killed another neighbors sheep. They were reported to animal control and they came out and seized the dogs (they lived 1/2 mile away) and they were euthanized. Most communities do not allow dogs to kill livestock.

I'm a lil late to this thread, but reading your posts just p***ed me off! I feel your pain and share your anger! People need to contain their dogs! Gosh darnit!

I cant even WALK my little dog sometimes because most of my neighbors let their dogs run around loose. They will run towards my dog who is def not afraid to defend herself.

I had a dog fight ensue once while she was leashed. It was terrifying! Three big dogs went after her. They pounced on her and started mauling her. She weighs all of 14 lbs. I kicked them and punched them and jabbed one in the eyes. Once I got a chance, I picked her up and RAN. I called the sheriff when I got home. My neighbors were cited and had to pay my vet bills. Those 3 are now contained, but there are still many who aren't.

I am SO SORRY. I love dogs, but wouldn't blame you at all if these dogs didn't make it home after destroying your property and your livestock.

And I know what you mean. People expect you to take the "high road" and be the "better person." When no one stands up for you, it gets old really fast. You do what you need to do, dangit. Screw everyone else.

My neighborhood used to have dog problems... Before a number of folks got free ranging poultry. At least one of the poultry keepers will not hesitate to shoot. TBH it has definitely helped my poultry out too, and there are hardly any roamers now because everyone knows the redneck up the street will put a bullet in it.

I am totally right there with you on all of that.
I have what people call large dogs. My smallest is 60# biggest is 105#.
NEVER out front off leash. NEVER ever not under our control.
The same sadly cannot be said for my neighborhood dogs. :(

I do not get to walk mine because they DEFINITELY would do what they felt needed to protect me.
Yeah....I am to small to stop them too.
I really don't think many ARE big enough to stop a 100+# dog though.

That is so sad. I'm sorry. I would surely be certain to let my neighbor know I am NOT pleased and I am armed!

My chickens were contained in a coop that was not strong enough to keep the dogs out. I will be rebuilding with stouter materials. I only let them out when I am there because I wish to be a good neighbor and my birds stay on my land only.
In NH, we can shoot to kill any animal that is harassing livestock. I used to have your problem at a home I owned years ago (no roaming dogs in my current area but I have a good, fenced-in yard) and politely informed all the neighbors via a note in their newspaper boxes about the law. No more roaming dogs. I only then had to deal with fox, mink, skunk, raccoon, hawks...

Fat chance of that, he has a yard full of cars to work on that he never seems to finish and what time he is not there, he spends it on the road doing finish carpentry. I rarely see him unless it is with a beer in his hand. I have known him for the 20 years we have lived beside him and have even given him a couple dozen eggs. I bear him no ill will but his dogs on the other hand will unfortunately get what is coming to them. If they show up in my yard again and I in any way feel threatened, they will not be leaving my yard under their own power again...
I WOULD bear him ill will - it's HIS fault that the dogs are loose and killing birds, not the dogs' fault! They are just doing what comes naturally. I would leave the carcasses on his front step.

If a dog EVER gets the taste of blood from a chicken or other livestock they will be back for more even if it's only to kill. It's in their DNA. Lead poisoning is the best bet for those pits. I'd never own one just because of their aggressive behavior. I have fifty chickens and four dogs of different breeds a terrier,a mini pinscher ,a feist, and a Lab and none of them bother my chickens to the point of killing them. I free range my chickens by day and their put away securely at night.I don't know if it was reported, but at least this way you would have a record of it and if it was to happen again you would have legal rights to take care of the matter. If it was me the people that own the dogs would only have one chance to secure their pets or their pets may meet their maker sooner than expected. I WILL NOT put up with animals that kill for no reason. A lot of times it is rogue dogs not pets that attack livestock because that's the only way they will get something to eat.Over the years we have lost goats ,chickens, rabbits, and other livestock due to dogs and it didn't go well for the dogs. I know today because of these pansy A$$ lovin people who think we should not hurt or kill a dog should also in respect to you have to think about the other people as well that owed the livestock that was lost. There are definitely times when an animal has to be put down. Best of luck on this.Your going to need it .Some people are as aggressive as their dogs or so called pets.
