Treating mites

I recently purchased a serama pair. The little roo has mites but I have not seen them on the hen. I treated them both with Eprinex and am going to clean the coop then apply Sevin Dust. My question is, even though I’ve treated them with the Eprinex, should I trim the feathers on his bum that have the mites? I treated him 2 days ago but I’m still seeing the mites on his bum. I plan to retreat after 10 days but was curious what to do about the mites that are still there. TIA!

Eprinex should kill them. It kills external parasites like lice and mites, so it'll get them. The things you're seeing on his tail might be nits, which are unhatched eggs. Are they moving around or are they just little white stationary things?

The eprinex dosage is 1/4 CC for bantams, and you need to make sure you get it on their bare skin.

You can dust with permethrin too if you want, but it's very toxic to cats and WILL kill them, so bear that in mind and maybe skip using it if you have cats.

Sevin used to be approved for use on poultry back when they made a 5% dust. They only make a 7% dust now that has not been approved for use on poultry. It's not toxic to them, however, and using it on them won't hurt them.

Whatever you use, make sure you treat again ten days later to kill off the new lice that will have hatched, and make sure to treat the hen too even if you haven't seen any on her.

Best thing to use is permithian spray.Sveen dust is toxic to chickens.Permithian gets the job done within minutes I found dead lice on my birds:
Sevin is approved for poultry in Canada, but not in the US. It is perfectly safe to use, though it might be ineffective in treating some mites.

I would still use permithian just because it’s super effective, just because I thats the only thing I’ve ever used.
