I would smell that egg daily, even just stick your nose up to the vent of the incubator until you get a better candler. While I agree blue eggs can be hard, I honestly don't feel like that looks exactly right ultimately.... but will be SUPER interested to follow along when you get another candler made. Also, if you could see into that egg during candling, at this stage, it really shouldn't all of a sudden be that dark. It's very interesting....

Okay...
The opaque blue egg started seeping liquid overt night. I can't see a crack and have not cracked it open yet, but it's tacky to the touch. When I get a chance to open it I'll post pictures of what's in there.

Good catch getting that baddie out of there!

Here's a hint that might come too late. Put the egg in a closed Ziploc bag before cracking it. That way the mess...and SMELL...is contained. A gallon sized one works great because you have plenty of extra play to manipulate and crack the egg.

Well so far I can only confirm 4 viable eggs.
2 O Shamo
1 Black Australorp
1 Blue Isbar

I am really hoping the couple I just can't tell are viable too. This has turned out to be one expensive experiment. I see why people recommend getting many more eggs than you want chicks.

I imagine there's a bit of trial and error that must happen. I'm sure the hatch rate improves as folx get the hang of it. I don't know that I if have the stomach for it. That rotten egg = ew.

And its good reason to try again - get your money's worth!

Shipped eggs are so tricky. Ideally we'd all dial in the incubating first. Then move on to the more difficult eggs. Unfortunately that seldom happen. The call of eBay is too strong. I also jumped right into the deep end. Ordering eggs up from all across the country. After disappointing results I now only order from 1 state away. Only during months with dependable weather. Also bantam or smaller eggs seem to ship much better. That's my experience anyway.

Hey there Aunt Angus. I saw your post of Picotee in thre calendar thread, good choice. I love that picture.

I read about the risks of shipping eggs, I was just hoping for a better outcome. If the two O Shamo eggs continue to do well it'll pretty much be worth the cost. The pullets sell for $150+, and I've seen stags go for $500+. So it's still worth it as I couldn't spend that much money for individual chickens.

I did spend $150 on a pair of Ayam Cemani though. I wish I had a picture of my wife's face when I told her I wanted to buy them.

Thr egg hatching will continue!
