Thanks everyone. It is really heartbreaking, he was such a sweet, tame Cockerel, as opposed to his dad who was a real grumpy kicker roo - his dad ended up as dinner, which means I have no more offspring from him, except for 4 eggs in the incubator - But they might not even be his chicks, as I have a randy little Silkie x roo that jumps every hen he sees...

At least I caught the culprit that got Trooper in the act - it was a Mongoose and he tried to grab another chick while I was out with them. I have all the chickens cooped up at the moment with my Jack Russell terriers doing a bit of Mongoose patrol for a few days.
