Trying fermenting feed

I’ve been making FF about 3 weeks now for my 12 chickens. They were hooked on it from day one. I just give them FF in the mornings as a supplement. They always have access to their dry feed.

Any method you make it should be fine as long as you follow the basic principles. Just do what’s easiest for you. This is my set up:

1. On the morning of day one I add 32oz by volume of feed to the green bowl and add about twice as much water. Stir. I cover it with an old T-shirt.
2. Stir twice daily for two days. Add water if needed.
3. On the morning of day three my batch is fermented. I pour it through the strainer into the red bowl. After about a hour it is strained. I then scoop it into the white container.
4. I pour the strained liquid back into the green bowl and start the process over again. I think using the strained FF liquid helps jump start the new batch. When I think the recycled liquid is getting old I’ll just start with fresh water.
5. I give half the container to the chickens every day and that is the 3 day cycle.

Why do I use 32oz? That’s all I can fit into my container. As soon as I finish my next jug of protein powder which is twice as big as the one you see in the pic. I’ll use it and make twice as much. That way I won’t need to strain anymore, I’ll just add more feed to thicken it up. Hence, less work for me and a little more FF for the chickens.

Also, all the water I use has been boiled and is room temperature (74* in my house). “They” say that removes the chlorine or whatever is in your tap water that might not be good for chickens.

Hope all this helps.

I never heard of boiling to remove chlorine, but I suppose it could work. If you put some water
In an open container and let it sit overnight, the chlorine dissipates.

Nice setup! The “used” water does jumpstart the next fermentation. It has lactobacillus growing in it. If you’re starting fresh you could pour in a little whey from yogurt for the same jumpstart.
