Thank you so much for all of the great advice! Seriously...I truly appreciate it!You'll have to assume bins are labeled correctly, but one thing I try to do (might be hard this year because chicks are selling out fast) is I look up the breeds available and double check what the chicks should look like vs what is in the bins. That should at least help you with getting what you *think* you're getting (though I've had my share of oops as far as breeds).
Otherwise as a general rule the chick breeds available should be suitable for your area, so get what you like. Look for bright eyed, somewhat active birds - if an employee grabs a bird that just doesn't seem right to you for any reason, ask them to get a different one. To try and avoid males I always specify to the employees to not grab overly friendly or curious chicks or chicks that stand upright... it's not a guarantee but males are more likely to fit those descriptions.
