Thank you so much for all of the great advice! Seriously...I truly appreciate it!You'll have to assume bins are labeled correctly, but one thing I try to do (might be hard this year because chicks are selling out fast) is I look up the breeds available and double check what the chicks should look like vs what is in the bins. That should at least help you with getting what you *think* you're getting (though I've had my share of oops as far as breeds).
Otherwise as a general rule the chick breeds available should be suitable for your area, so get what you like. Look for bright eyed, somewhat active birds - if an employee grabs a bird that just doesn't seem right to you for any reason, ask them to get a different one. To try and avoid males I always specify to the employees to not grab overly friendly or curious chicks or chicks that stand upright... it's not a guarantee but males are more likely to fit those descriptions.
Good luck. I really want you to get your chicks. You have been doing your homework and gathering what you need ahead of time, you deserve them. Meanwhile, think about your coop. Check out the coop pages, because the extra time always seems to be needed.
