TSC ducks- need breed i.d.

You were smart to put stepping stones in there. Contrary to what most people think, baby ducks - even half grown ones - can get water logged and drown! Even after your ducklings are grown, you'll want to have easy in-and-out access for them. You never know when they may need it ... accidents do happen!
Oh it would break my heart if I caused one to drown!

I give mine kiddie pools, but any water bowl will do for them. I mean that literally. Any place they find water more than a couple inches deep is a pool for them. I have a deep tank that has an auto filler on it that I use to water the birds... Ducks love it and scare me to death regularly.

A few years back an member had one of her Runners drown in her 5 gal heated water bucket after that I put a scrap piece of board over half of mine to keep anyone from climbing in.
So sad! I had a cockatiel drown in a bucket a long time ago, my fault for not taking it out of the room. I still feel like crying when I think about it.

So sorry for your loss:hugs I lost a tiny Bantam chick in a water bucket I thought was placed high enough she could get to it now when I have babies no buckets are set out in the area where babies are. Hard lessons to learn.

Thanks for your empathetic response, and for sharing your experience. I meant to tell you how much I like your avy!

I think lots of people just use kiddie pools and do very well with them. We just happened to have this old koi pond laying around. We put some concrete blocks for steps, cause I think it may be too deep for the juveniles we will be putting out there.

I am not super knowledgeable about ducks, so hopefully more experienced folks will weigh in here.
I am curious to see how you clean out that pool?

I have a hand operated siphon pump from Harbor Freight. Almost indestructible, it works kinda like a bicycle pump.I will pump it out at the same time the hose is running at the bottom to keep the muck suspended. Also the pool lifts out pretty easy if we need to.
