TSC Problems and Ranting

Do they not quarantine new chicks at your local? I thought that was company policy. The 3 near me all get them on Weds but don't release them for sale until Friday. The other feed stores around here who offer chicks also hold them for minimum 24 hours.

Maybe it's an AZ thing...
Mine do not I guess, the chickens had just got there that day and they already had them on sale the same day.

They definitely should quarantine them. Some people may be adding chicks into a group of chicks they already have.

I can not complain about the staff at my TSC. They are pleasant and helpful. Chicks, ducks, poults, keets are kept clean, well fed, and warm. The one major problem is the misidentification of breeds, and that may very well be a hatchery problem. One day I did see an associate trying to convince a customer that white turkey poults were Cornish X - well, they were in a trough tagged 'Cornish X'.

The people at TSC label the chicks themselves. I had called once and they had said they were in the labeling process of the chicks. I would think a hatchery that specializes in breeds would be able to tell the difference between a poult and a chick, but you never know.

They're not a hatchery, and again, not everything employee will know everything. The amount of times I have been asked a question I didn't have an answer for, or was put on a task that I was not familiar with is more than I can count on fingers

How many pepperonis on a large?

(runs away cackling)

Does anyone ever wonder if people in charge of chicks at TSC even care to work with the chicks?

I called them the last time I got chicks to see if they had their new stock in (I had called the day prior and they said it was running late.) And so I asked them if they got the new chicks in and the man on call said "Unfortunately we have."

I really did not know what to say back to that except "What?" I was so confused.

Has anyone else had an experience like this with TSC?

Some of the stores in Georgia were getting ENTIRE shipments DOA because of mail delays. Maybe there were a lot of sick or dead chicks in the shipment, "Unfortunately" sounds a lot like something I would sarcastically say if I was obliged to sell weak or dying babes.

The TSC employees definitely are RETAIL workers, not SMEs. I've had one tense up in horror when I flagged her down to inform her that the crested cream legbars (that she got from the back of the store) were NOT all female. She mumbled "the hatchery said..." clearly expecting to get chewed out about something she didn't know about or have control over. She relaxed when it became clear I wasn't going to verbally abuse her. I started info dumping on her about autosexing chicks and what the boys and girls look like. Sick or injured chicks are usually kept in back, and if you show that you know what you're doing, you can usually get them for 25 cents or free, because they're relieved that the chick might actually have a chance to survive. So, not the greatest situation for employees or chicks, sadly.
