True Rhode Island Reds are a dark mahogany color though they look black. People are use to seeing the lighter red color from the hatcheries. My lines can be traced back many generations.

Are the heritage lines/breeds hardier and more disease resistant than today's bloodlines?

I think it's more about the care they're given. I don't think they are anymore disease resistant. I do have the state come out once a year and test my birds. I do provide special feed for showing, breeding, and while they are growing out.
