Nikki's new silkie. This is the sweetest bird I have ever seen.


You will love that silkie, they have the sweetest personalities! My three are so much fun to watch. One is a complete ditz an is always cracking us up.

I got lucky with my silkie, but she does need to be cleaned up. The barred rock and buff Orpington seem okay, but I do not know how to check them for health issues. Mine are all from NPIP(?) flocks. He got the cuckoo maran Pullets?
I am very interested in one or two when they get older. I am very glad I went with my girlfriend, or I would have come home with a ton of chickens. The lakevanders he got were beautiful, though.

I was wrong they are Barred Rock, not cuckoo maran. He told me all this at 2 AM as he climbed into bed so I didn't catch everything right LOL.
He also forgot to pick up two birds he bought (sebrights) and a cage- luckily the auctioneer got them and we called him and will arrange to pick them up later.

He did say they were all NPIP which makes me feel better. I just worry about him adding chicks into the brooder with our cream legbar chicks which are worth their weight in gold it seems! The golden lakevelder is the one the dog killed last night... the silver lakenvelders do look nice, we are going to resell them though we just don't have a way to set them up as their own flock and still working on getting fencing up for the others.

sounds like the auction was a success. sorry i missed it. been up to the hosp. darlin man is looking good. may be home on monday.
got 4 eggs last night so that means all my big birds are finally laying. getting a lot of cloud cover and a ittle rain.

Alrighty here we go- PIC HEAVY sorry if you have dial-up!

Here's my hatch- ended up with 4 black ameraucana, 1 blue ameraucana, 2 black isbar and 1 splash isbar! The splash was a surprise- I continued to incubate that egg even though I couldn't see any movement and it made it! It is having trouble finding its legs though- I hope it figures it out soon, started it on Poly-vi-sol in case it was deficiency related. One of the black A's had wry neck really bad, started pedialyte and poly-vi-sol right away but it passed away a few hours after it hatched.

Next are the general groups of chickens Lonny picked up at the Coweta auction- I kid you not I spent THE ENTIRE DAY washing, soaking, treating, etc. Still fuming a little about that.
Here are the 15 silkies (not sure how old they are so I'm going to keep them in for a few days), and one barred rock (has a prolapsed vent... one of my ALL DAY projects

) and two with eye injuries (probably pecking injuries)

A close up of one of them (this is after two baths and two blow dries, they were matted with dirt and fecal matter, even had to clip clumps out of their feathers). I do have to say though that I only saw one "crawly" on them through both baths. Most of their crops are softening up after the epsom salt bath, mineral oil, and ACV/pedialyte/poli-vi-sol water. Still one or two I am concerned about.


Here are most of the 15 barred rocks. Much cleaner only took one epsom salt bath to clean them up, noticed the one with the prolapsed vent. Same conclusion on their crops- most are softening up after treatment, still one or two I am concerned about.


Here are the silver lakenvelders. They were sold to him as "show quality," but even to my untrained eye knowing nothing about the breed I spot problems. Their white area has a lot of black spot feathers, and the male appears to be tail-less although that may be from another rooster picking on him. I would not call them show quality. They are also very flighty and don't like to be held, but I caught a few of them to look them over and they look healthy.


Phew... here is one of the barred rocks I am worried about. His crop isn't hard, but seems exceptionally full and very firm. I hope it works out and I don't have to deal with crop surgery on top of all the other health issues with these chickens...



And just to add a smile, gotta love a water baby!


And just to tell you how the conversation went about this auction, we decided together he could get a cage or two, feeders or waterers, a back up incubator if it was a good price, and MAYBE one or two good layers.
He came home with:
15 barred rocks
15 black silkies
6 lakenvelders (one of which got killed last night because he forgot to lock the run)
5 cages
1 waterer
12 BBR OEGB eggs
9 lakenvelder eggs

He will NEVER go to an auction by himself again...

Well, I just found out the silkie pullet I bought is a rooster. Not happy at all about that. The one bird I spent most of my money on is worthless to me. Oh well, that's how it goes, I guess.

rinda- Congrats on the hatch!!! Those are some cute chicks. Sorry to hear about the health of those birds. I know I'm not going to that auction again. Quick question about them, how old are the barred rocks? Are they anywhere close to laying age? Are they bantems?

I wouldn't blame the auction as a whole, I think it's just some sellers. The birds are moved through there quickly and I think the sellers should have their cages/birds clearly marked instead of leaving it up to the auctioneer and helpers to determine what is what. I spent far more time looking at the birds before they were auctioned than I did in the auction area itself. I kept track of sellers numbers so I'd know who I wanted to buy from and who I didn't. Silkies are hard to sex, maybe it was an honest mistake. Betsy told me that there are people that swear a roo is a roo and it will lay an egg at a show or swear it's a girl and it will crow. You may get lucky, maybe it has more of a roo appearance but will be a girl. I'm pretty sure the baby I got is a roo, which won't work for me and I'll spend the next several months fretting about it and going back and forth rather it's a boy or girl. I hate that part! Auctions scare me a little because I worry about things spreading around, but it's the easiest way to add to my little bird family. I just bring them home and bathe them, dust them and give them medicated food and hope for the best.

No I don't blame the auction, Lonny is just the type of person who gets caught up in what a "great deal" something is and can't pass it up LOL! Estate sales, garage sales, and auctions are his element... you get the picture! Usually I try to be with him though to temper his "BUY IT" urges! Also he was buying breeds he knew nothing about, which is not a good idea, and like Jen said the best way is to see them up close and personal before the auction starts so you have a better idea which birds are healthy and which birds aren't.

No these barred rocks are not bantams. The one set was labeled as 8 weeks old, the other set looks about 2 weeks older. The older ones I can tell at least one roo and one hen. I have NO clue on the silkies, don't even know how old they are. The only layers he bought were the lakenvelders. Oh and the seabright hen/OEGB rooster set that he forgot to pick up, but I haven't seen them yet.
