TULSA area Cluckers

Wow... Well, I've always wanted a German Shepherd pup and maybe this would be the right time to get one - when I get some chicks and she can learn to be an LGD. Not sure though. Chickens themselves are a pretty big commitment but NOTHING compared to an intelligent dog... We'll see.

Ahh...come on! We just got one a couple months ago. Molly is WAY too smart for her own good. ;)

It's been a little while since I checked in to this thread. Mainly stay on the Okies on the BYC one and once I finally get done reading everyones posts it's time to get off the computer. I'm going to put this out there to see if someone here might have one... I'm looking borrow or even buy an incubator. Forced air preferred but beggers can't be choosers, right? So if you or someone you know has one let me know. If you trust me enough to let me borrow one I promise I will return it in the very condition you have it as you place it into my possession. Actually that's a half lie because if its been stored and dusty or dirty (trust me I don't mind cleaning it to use it) I will return it cleaned up. Because you don't know me I will even give you a deposite. Or rent it.

So from the way I'm reading the city ordinances it seems free range, even for only a few hours a day, is not allowed. Do you all do it anyway?

I let my chickens free range last summer. But only when I was in the back yard watching them. We built a small chicken house with a 12x12 chicken run. The run is covered in netting so I do not have to worry about arial predators.

Technically you are not supposed to. But ordinances only matter if you are a bad neighbor and your neighbors complain. that is what my city councelor says.

i have seen my dogs eat cat, goat, and horse poo they are gross :sick

And we still call them "Man's Best Friend." lol

Yay! I happily added 4 more black tailed buff marans laying hens to my flock today. Love those dark brown eggs!

Yay for marans!!!

For some reason I read the city ordinances as allowing 6 "hens" but after re-reading it, it says adults. Do any of you mid-towners have roos or do you stick with hens? I'd like to have a roo but don't want to risk the ire of my potential neighbors. I think I'll ask around the neighborhood before I make that decision :)

And since it's talking about "poultry" and not specifically "chickens" I can have a turkey if I want! This is getting better all the time!

There is no ordinance against roosters. You can have 6 adults and 14 chicks under 8 weeks old. Turkeys and roosters can be noisy so you can still be given a citation for noise disturbance.

I have 2 roosters right now. But they are both inside. I am going to try and see if my neighbors notice ;) I have good neighbors right next door. I am not sure about the rest of the neighborhood.

Now the hiusing requirements are rediculous. Your coop and run are supposed to be covered with hardware clith or window screening. The reason I was given was so that a fly can't come land on your chicken poop and then go land on your neighbor's back yard cookout hot dog. Really? So what's to keep a fly from landing on my neighbor's dog poop and then come land on my iced tea straw?? hm??

But the main thing. Keep your coops clean and not smelly so your neighbors happy so they won't complain. And you won't have issues. That is what my city councelor said.

One more last call.... I am ordering chicks from Whelps hatchery. Hatch Date March 17th. If any of you want to place an order for that date you can order with mine. But I need your cash Sat or Sunday.

:)

@lonnyandrinda how does the color of your sapphire eggs compare to the color of the CL eggs? Lighter, darker? Are they like Olive eggers in the since that you only get the desired color in the F1 cross or will the sapphires breed true if bred together?

I expect them to lay just like the cl since blue egg gene is a complete dominant gene. The eggs should be larger than cl since momma lays xl eggs. Sold two pol pullets to a lady last week and she is going to report back on egg color in a few weeks. No they won't breed true without further work because they each carry only one blue egg gene. Half their offspring will get it and half won't.

I am in the process of building my first BYC coop. I have ordered two silver lace wyandottes and wondering what I should get to complete my coop of either four or six. I've been considering barred rocks or buffs. Any advice out there for a first timer?
