TULSA area Cluckers

I'm hatching!!!!! A friend loaned me his LG forced air incubator with turner. I'm getting at least 9 Swedish Flower eggs Monday.Whee!!!!!

YAY it is so ADDICTING! Have fun candling and watching the hatching, we love it here!

On a sad note, I'm losing one of my remaining 2 Isbar chicks tonight, don't think she will make it to morning. That is the hard part of hatching, losing chicks for no apparent reason and you feel like your hands are tied.

Rinda- how does you guys weekend look? I was wondering if maybe we could come pick up the ameraucanas if you have some time available? Also, I have some 2" chicken wire that is leftover. Do you think you guys could use it, or should I try to pawn it off on someone else? Haha.

Sorry about you losing another chick. That must be really hard after all of the waiting.

Yes, give me a call tomorrow I will PM you my number in case you don't have it already, we will either be going to the Admiral flea market to sell honey OR staying home to finish the grow-out coop tomorrow, it will depend on weather and Lonny's sleep tonight. Flipping back and forth from night shift is so hard. We certainly will take the chicken wire if you are sure you don't have any use for it.

I've been pondering on your odd-colored chick, best guess I have is it MAY grow up to be a lemon blue color, blue wings and body but brown neck and head. That's how it looks right now anyway, there isn't much info about it online that I can find. Still not a standard color but common enough it has a name.

Yeah we did lose the Isbar chick. :( Hannah was so sad, she had named it "Snowy." But I have 8 more due to hatch Friday and kept 3 "maybes" in the bator, I'll take all the chances I can get! This is out of 15 shipped. The Isbar eggs are harder for me to "look" into when I candle than the Ameraucana or FBCM were. I told Hannah if we get another splash in this batch she can name it Snowy!

I am loving this nice slow rain we are getting! My husband got the yard mowed last night in a very light sprinkle. I just really wish it would stop for just a couple of hours this evening. I've got a 5K race to run at 8 and they are doing it rain or shine. 80% chance this evening so looks like I better get over it and be ready to run in the rain!

We got three new chickens this week, a Barred Rock, an Ameracauna, and a Columbian Rock. Got a tarp put up so they don't get wet in their temporary pen until they are ready to be moved. Had our baby Frizzle in with them but he was driving them crazy so now he's in a seperate pen next to theirs and he is so not happy about it. He really wants constant attention. If anyone is in the market for a Frizzle he is so stinkin sweet, I REALLY wish he were a girl, he's so friendly and cute. My girls want to keep him until he crows but I don't know if that's wise.

Well, I found a bunch of mite/lice eggs at the base of the silkies feathers when I gave him a bath today. I dusted thecrap out of all of the birds with sevin dust. Not a good day.

How hard is it to get rid of these, and how long does it take? Are they the same kind of lice that people get? Should I get stuff for the kids hair and the house just in case? I'm kinda freaking out here. Anyone ever have this problem before? All advise is welcome. Thanks in advance!

Jenshens- how old are your new additions? Where did you get them from? Columbian rock? That sounds really cool, now I'm going to have to google and oogle those... Haha

I have never dealt with them myself but I'm sure there is some great info here on BYC, but I do know that poultry lice cannot use humans as hosts, they are different than head lice.

It's actually raining here. i believe it rained most of last night as well. This is new. I've not had to deal with muddy runs before. I hope you get the mites off you chickens Reagor. So far my biggest pest has been flies.
I've got my borrowed incubator fired up. Expecting the hatching eggs tomorrow. I'm kinda nervous. I've been looking for a hygrometer to measure the humidity. I've heard lots of folks say Walmart. But where. Not in the pet section.
My sweet man is recovering very well from the surgery. Taking it slow. We might get out for a short walk at the zoo today. We really want to see the new baby jaguars.
Hope everyone has a slightly soggy and cloudy day!

Livid this morning. Carnage in the yard. My dog is GONE -as in, as soon as we can figure out how. I hate it but I can't have her ripping into the coops every time we have a thunderstorm. She got the whole grow-out pen 8 silkies, 1 barred rock, 1 maran mix, 1 splash cuckoo maran.

I doubt we can rehome her so the only option is....
She knew she was in trouble this morning, I didn't even see what she had done but when I walked out the door she was cowering in a ball in the wet grass- she KNEW she had done wrong. Then she went and hid- THEN I saw it.

@Cathie we have had good luck so far without a hygrometer, I keep the water trays filled and block all but one hole in the cover with pieces of tape. But if you really want one look in the yard and garden section at Walmart, or better yet ask at Lowes or Home Depot, they have little electronic digital things that measure temp, pressure, humidity, etc. Here is one for reference: http://www.iallergy.com/product155/product_info.html?gclid=CLzC67urhbICFcKDQgodhVsA1g they are cheap online too, maybe just order from Ebay but I'm sure Lowe's has them.
