TULSA area Cluckers

Phew, how am I? HOT! I am done working outside for the day. But the new coop is nearly done, all that's left is the roof and to figure out how we are going to do outside access for the nest boxes, the feed/water system, and a little bit of hardware. We bought a can of Oops paint at Lowe's for $5 and it turned out to be OSU orange! Haha that's Lonny's alma mater so he was happy.

Here it is! The things we were looking for were easy maintenance, easy feeding and watering, 100% removable roosts, and lots of summer ventilation that is easily covered in the winter. We also wanted it semi-movable since it is going in the garden this year but not next year. So we designed a main rectangular coop and then a feed/water bay on one end and a nest bay on the other end, they butt up to the coop and we will hook them somehow to hold them up tight. The plan for feed/water is 5 gal buckets that sit on top and PVC that runs down to bowls inside. We designed it with deep litter method in mind, also the fact that is it IN the garden so we can just MOVE IT when we want to spread the manure and bedding around. We made lock blocks that pivot on a screw to hold the roosts in place, also designed the nesting boxes so that all dividers slide out of the way for cleaning, etc. Main coop is 4ft x 6ft, feed and water bay and nesting bay are 15"x15"x30".We were given some old office cubicle dividers, we are going to use the iron frames to frame up a storage shed and peeled off the fabric to expose the 1/4" plywood underneath, so that was free, the treated runners were on clearance at Lowe's- a whole wrap (maybe 25 or 30 pieces) for the price of 2. Some of the lumber was left over from other projects but some we did buy. Chicken wire was left over from another chicken run. Clear bubble window will go in the roof, it was $5 at a garage sale.

Comments and critiques welcome. This is the first coop we have built and are not too proud to admit we may not be thinking of all the angles.

And here's our4 week old blue Ameraucana, Chubby.

And one of our four week old crested cream legbars, I call her Fancy since she was the first to get a crest!

Number One Coop is the Cowboy Coop brought to you by lonyandrinda! That is some color. Bet it glows in the dark. Seriously what a great set up. i love your idea about the bays on the ends.
And in other news. took My darling man back to hospital this morning. More issues with his last belly surgery. Aarrgghh!! He just got the staple out 2 weeks go from the last one.
Luckily this doesn't seem to be surgical and I'm hoping to get hm home tomorrow or the ext day.
Rinda the wee ones (can't really call them babies anymore) are getting very bold. I have them out of daycare for a couple of hours now twice a day and they seem to be holding their own with the big ones. They are really buddies for sure they fly around each other and it is hilarious.
My hatch isn't going so well. Walli (egg sender) thinks the eggs might have gotten too hot during transport. Something I never thought of. i candled t day 3 and 7 and saw only one egg with any veining. the rest are blobby, or clear. I'm giving them another week.
The school that exploded and burned today was my my kids elementary school. They are both pretty shocked and sad. I haven't driven by there yet but i heard it was terrible.
Hope everyone can stay cool till the weekend.

Oh no I am so sorry, I hadn't heard about it yet my kids have been CRAZY today! So are they temporarily relocating classes or taking a few days to sort things out first before deciding? Sorry about the eggs, my shipped eggs haven't been so hot this summer either. 3/24 (but 2 died within days) and 3/15, I have another batch due for lockdown Friday from Jordan Farms, more isbars and cream legbars so we can "diversify" our stock a little, so far it looks like 8/12 but that's what my 3/15 looked like and I had a lot of last minute quitter eggs.

Forgot to mention the other handy thing we did with the coop, the square piece at the front with the entrance door is the exact same size as the bays, so if we need to rearrange things and put the entrance on an end we can just scoot a bay over there!

My other chickies that were the same age as yours were ones the dog got. :( But my up and coming 4 week olds are getting pretty rambunctious, too!

Had my first incubator explosion today - oh my WORD!!!!

Of course it was when I was in a hurry to get out the door, too! I hope I NEVER have to experience that again... I will be much more vigilant with my candling. I have to say though that the one that exploded was an Isbar (green egg) which are MUCH harder for me to look into with my little rigged candling system.

I know I posted earlier but wanted to share one picture, something I saw someone else do while trying to show the true color of eggs. You place a red apple in the photo- it let's the camera adjust the lighting and color better and also helps people judge the true shade of the eggs. Also makes it easier to show your photo isn't photoshopped or adjusted to make the eggs look better than they really are. I think it did a great job! These are Ameraucana eggs, the darker row in back are from my blue hen and the slightly lighter row in front are from my black hen. The white egg is a slightly off-white Lakenvelder egg.

Is it too cold outside for 4week old chicks? Do I need to bring them inside?

If they were out last night I would think they would be fine tonight, as long as they can huddle together and they have a place in the coop that is draft free. I had 2 1/2 week olds out last night and although they looked very "fluffy" this morning and huddled under some of the 5 week olds they were fine.
