I found one of my turkeys droopy and when I checked him found a large open wound in the chest area.

Is there a way to carterize or treat for infection…?

I don’t have a vet who sees poultry close by.

I know the pictures are not the best. I’m by myself and having trouble getting a good photo.

Also, I have him separated from the rest of the flock in a dog crate but he’s acting very stressed about it.

He’s also doing this weird large inhale that sounds.. not good.. almost like congested?

Can you get a video of the large inhale? Upload video to youtube and provide a link.

I wonder if he's got a ruptured air sac, do you see anything that looks like air trapped under the skin?

For general wound care, trim the feathers around the wound so you can see if more clearly.
Clean the wound with an antiseptic like Chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) - from what I can see, I'd swab the wound instead of flushing - I can't tell how much of that's open into the body cavities. You can also spray with Vetericyn if you have that.

Let's call in a few that know more about Turkeys - @casportpony @Molpet

Thank you! He hasn’t done the inhale since I posted about it - don’t know if that’s good or bad. I’ve got him inside with me and gave him a bowl with nutri-drench water although he hasn’t touched it.

Will go get some antiseptic right now. Do I need to worry about bleeding with trimming back the feathers? I’ve never clipped wings or anything because of the bleeding out warnings I’ve heard.

He is still gobbling and pruning but definitely droopy.

I’m including another photo that shows the wound a bit better.

In the 4th picture above, you can see muscle and organs. Do you know what happened. Was he attacked by a predator or cut on a sharp object? I would clean the wounds with chlorhexidene and water, saline, or a wound spray from your feed store (Vetericycn, Microsyn etc ) and smear on some Triple Antibiotic Ointment twice a day to keep it from drying out. Is he for breeding, or are you planning to butcher him soon? If he gets infected, he might not good for the latter. I would also post on the turkey forum here:

It's good that his breathing is better now.

It should be fine to trim the feather ends away from the wound so you can clean it and see if better.

Hopefully the wound is not too deep and he'll heal up o.k.

He was going to be for butcher, but I don’t know that I’ll be able to if I’m successful in nursing him back to health. And then of course as you said, if he gets an infection, won’t be able to anyway.

He’s been eating, drinking and defecating normally (my office smells awful 🥴), so I’m hopeful I can get him healed up.

I did get Vetericyn and applied to the wound.
