Turkey Talk for 2014

400

They are so cute!!

I'm thrilled my hubby has an interest - he should - this was all his idea! If it wasn't for him nagging for chickens for 3yrs, we would have never gotten birds! Seriously, you should read my members page.

Quote: In 2009 my husband wanted to get chickens for eating eggs. I said no. In 2010 he asked again. I said no but I did some researching and found BYC back then. In 2011 he asked again. I finally caved. I started with 14 birds - 5 Brown Leghorns, 3 Red Sexlinks, 3 Amberlinks and 3 Tetra Tints. I really wanted Black Australorps, Delawares and Wyandottes. So, when TSC got Black Australorps, I got 15... and 8 Easter Eggers to go with them the next week.

I seriously wouldn't let him get away with not helping. I may have gotten out of control at some point (in the first 2wks)... He reaps the benefits of my chicken and turkey adventures. Just, can he share? The turkeys were my idea.

My broad breasted order from Meyer will be here in less than 2 weeks! I can't wait! I am seriously hoping this year's meat turkeys don't prove to be as much of a pain in the *** as last years. I am hoping for healthy, robust birds that are decent sized in June to take to the swap and make some of my money back. I don't need 20 meat birds for us anyways!

Your story isn't too much different than mine. DH wanted chickens, I thought all birds were disgusting.
Meyer sent me a message that they have a pick-up special for BB. $4.75. My sister and my my mother live an hour away. I have a good excuse for going. Fortunately, Calico Creek feed store has them for $5 next week. I can avoid seeing family!

Please remind me, ANYONE. In general, boys feather faster than girls, right? I picked all pullets last year with only one that I couldn't decide on, and it was a boy. Now, I can't remember how I did it! So, can anyone give me a clue?

I was never a bird person. I remember my neighbor having all kinds of pheasants, peacocks and chickens and I just hated them. They were noisy and dirty. My friend's sister had parakeets I thought were noisy, a pain in the butt and dirty. My gram and pap had chickens. My great grandad has chickens at 92yrs old - he makes his order of 30 or so red sexlinks every year to replace his aging stock. His parents had a turkey and chicken farm. I guess I come from a long line of fowl people (pun intended).

If you are looking at poults, boys will have bigger snoods, thicker legs & be slightly bigger by a few days old.

I had no idea turkey poults look so much like chicks!! So cute!

Oh, & if I didn't convince him to cover the pen, my hen sure did!!! She was out in less than an hour!!! LMBO!
