Turkey Talk for 2014

400
. My baby "the Mommel"

My hubby put up his trail spy camera around our farm and found we have ferrets (as well as the dreaded cats that ate our baby rabbits) but my question is, would a ferret take on a turkey? The cat won't. Our chihuahuas aren't much of a guard against them lol

Is this the pair where you were asking if they were BBB or Heritage Bronze? It's hard to tell on the tom, since he's behind the hen in all the pictures, but the hen looks BB.

I agree, the hen looks to be Broad Breasted and its likely that if you got them together from the same feed store than the Tom is BB also. Most likely you will not get fertile eggs from them.

To the best of my knowledge, there is not a breed of turkeys that the hens don't go broody.  Every turkey hen that I have had that was mature enough to lay eggs went broody and it did not matter what breed the turkey hen was.

Cool thanx! I was hoping mine will go broody, but after I thought about it, I was like wait, maybe she won't. Its still been pretty cold here, so she has plenty of time. In the meantime, I've got 9 eggs in the bator from 2 different settings, & 6 (as of now) waiting to go in tomorrow.

Quote: Most people don't realize that cooking releases a huge amount of nutrients from the cells of plants and meats -- at the cost of some energy input though. ( I'm also an advocate of eating fresh or frozen whole fruits and vegies too.) THere are a number of decent books on root cellering-- info which lists which crops store well in what temp and humidity. I still have 3 butternut squashes that are just starting to go, and one pumpkin still on the stair steps going to second floor. Winter squash holds up well. I did find, by mistake, that summer squash will also put on thick rind if it is a big over grown size and will hold for a long long time.

As you have 1 acre, have you looked into how to grow UP to increase yeilds?

My new hen laid an egg yesterday! I just got her Sunday, so I wasn't expecting one. I knew as soon as I saw it that it wasn't from one of my BBB hens. I hope she continues to lay an egg I can recognize. Of course, I went right home and cracked it open. Not fertile. I hope by the time my incubator is empty, Mr. Tom will have things figured out.

I candled one of the BBB eggs yesterday and it's clear. I'm sure the others will be too, but it's no surprise. But the chicken eggs I candled (just one of each because it's actually a bit early) are developing. My one Speckled Sussex is clear though. Sigh. I was sent the wrong eggs and only got one SS egg. The rest are Silkies -not what I ordered- and Lav Orps, which are a friends. So nothing in this hatch for me.

I want to thank all of you for your suggestions and support on hatching turkey eggs. I just had my first 100 % hatch. My first hatch was 50%, then dropped incubator temp by 0.5 degree and dropped humidity from high 40s to 20, hatcher temp dropped to 98.5 and humidity up to 65%. Second hatch was 5 out if six, now 4 out of 4. So this set had the changes made half way through incubation, still hatched early on day 26 but air cells were a lot bigger and didn't have any trouble hatching.

I picked up my first poults a week ago. Their aprx DOB is the 17Th. I picked two with thick legs assuming they were male. I am wondering now if I have a male and female? They have been weighed three times now.
2.0 oz 2.3 oz
2.6 oz 3.0 oz
3.8 oz 4.3 oz

If you notice, one goes up a certain amount, and the other mimics it each time minus point one oz. What do the experts of the group think?
based on my birds ther can be alot of variation between birds . . .

yup.. especially if it's a mom ferret with kits

years ago (back in the 70's) i was working at a pet store where we had ferrets.. mom ferret escaped one night after we had gone home.. she attacked and killed a 6 foot long caimen

so yeah.. if a ferret is hungry enough... a turkey is fair game
