Turkey Talk for 2014

I have one right now who is broody on a nest of fake eggs... tempted to sneak a few poults under her and see if she will be a good mom or not

I had a hen last year go broody on one egg at the end of the summer. I removed the egg and she still insisted on sitting on that empty nest. I finally broke her of being broody by allowing her to have contact with the month old poults that I had taken out of the brooder. It took a couple of days but she adopted the youngsters as her own. I did not "sneak" them under her but allowed her to initiate the contact. She did a good job of raising them.

In reference to your nest of fake eggs, I have found it necessary to only leave one fake egg in the nest to keep the hen laying there.

After a week of reading in my spare time - I made it through this thread. Great info!! I have three midget whites, one tom, two hens, purchased as poults and brooded and raised by a broody chicken (started with nine - the rest went to camp). The tom has been doing his job. First eggs were laid last week (apparently both hens - slightly different base egg coloring). Eggs are fertile. I'm so excited!!! I mostly want to clarify that I should move the tom to a different pen once the hens go broody/hatch poults... THANK YOU!!

she started out with one dummy egg.. then stole the eggs from the other nest boxes.. so I figured she could play momma when the first batch of eggs in the incubator hatch (she worked so hard to get those eggs into her nest.. just didn't have the heart to take them back)!

They are still young and learning. Sometimes it takes awhile for them to get the hang of it or for the hen to cooperate. Also the Toms sometimes just don't get it and are immature and will stand in front or to the side.

Last year was my first breeding season and I only had 2 hens then. One of the hens eggs were infertile pretty much until the end of the summer. They were inexperienced. This year I have seen definite mating going on for a few weeks now. So I know at least a few of my hens are fertile.

If you post pics we can help you with whether they are BB or Standard.

sorry for the delay on the pictures. i hate when work comes between me & my poultry but none of the flock wish to work
