Turkey Talk for 2014

I hope you heal up fast.  Take care of yourself.  Thank goodness you have the 13 year old to help you out and feed/water the birds.  Good luck.

Thanks! I have a 12 yr old too, but she is a selfish soul. :/ She won't do anything without a fight if it doesn't benefit her.

I walked out with my 13 yr old and she was adding food an water to the cage so momma moved. She has 6 babies! 2 chicks and 3 poults for sure. The last was still wet, so I couldn't see what it was for sure. Hopefully another poult. I plan to let her raise 4 and keep all the females.

Ahh, selfish children can be so challenging!! An ever-changing drama of determining their emotional currency, and retraining them with a manipulative mix of blackmail and bribery. The unending duel on the rollercoaster through puberty! (Hey, if you can't make it go away, at least make it sound poetic!) My sympathies.

Your Narri is very pretty and she has some beautiful poults. Good thing you forgot the eggs long enough to find this little one. lol

Thank you! They are growing like weeds! LOL I can't wait to see what they are but only plan on keeping one Tom though. The other Momma hen is not getting up to take care of the littlest one. I have been doing my best to keep it fed and watered as much as possible.

My 1st incubator hatched poults! 6 eggs total, 4 hatched, 1 died after partially pipping and 6 had an embryo present but has not pipped yet. Mama is a Narra/BR x and tom is either a bronze or RP! Can't wait to see what they look like after feathering!

I have one question. When you set eggs do you count the day you set them as day one? I am going to be setting some turkey eggs, never tried turkeys before. I'm getting 24 Beltsville White eggs. Info will be greatly appreciated.

Rick

If you don't mind me asking where did you get the eggs from?

I just noticed this poult(hatched this morning) had what looked like poop build up, so I washed its rear and I see this. I don't recall this on the other poults. I tried looking for info but saw no pics, is this Omphalitis? And if so, what can I do?! Otherwise it seems like its doing well for being less than a day old

Yolk sac didn't completely absorb but has dried. If you have blu-kote use that just to make sure it doesn't get infected. I get this in about 30% of my poults, usually from humidity & temp running a bit high. If you don't have blu-kote, use a little rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball or q-tip but don't over soak the area. You should only need to do it once or twice. It will finish drying out & either fall off or finish absorbing within a couple weeks.

Thank you for your response! I called our local farm store & they recommended peroxide & neosporin, so I did that last night. It does seem to look a bit better this morning. Activity level is great, so I'm hopeful!
