Turkey Talk for 2014

Quote: I had mine butchered at 5 months-- HUGE birds, males dressed out at #35. TOo big for most ovens and roasting pans. My pont is that THese broad breasted will be done growing out and should be in the freezer long before THanksgiving. If heritage types, the 7-9 months to grow out give a decent carcass. I'm experiementing with a higher protein feed with my next group of poults. This is the first year that I have acess to 27-28% protein turkey feed, and I'm curiious to see if it will make a difference in the growth fates of my heritage stock.

THis thread goes so fast, feel free to pm me.

My RP hen has hatched 5 pure RP babies!!! Yay!!!!! This is my 1st rp babies that I've hatched, that weren't sold before they hatched. Cause I kept them a secret!!! MINE!!! Lol

Lol...you sound like me. Every time someone comes to get birds they either want my two 2 month old poults that I'm keeping for me or they want my breeders....ummmmm NO!

I couldn't get through all 307 pages before registering for an account and posting. :) My husband and I just bought our first poults yesterday. Three broad breasted bronze. The previous owners had a very large chicken coup and run already set up. We'll probably need to make some modifications to the entry/exit for the turkeys to be able to get in and out once they are bigger.

Anyone have any tips for first timers?

Well, what do you already have in place? If you can give us measurements, preferably with pictures, we can give you some recommendations for modifications.

How have I missed this thread? Looks like it's the place to go for all things turkey. We have hatched our first poults this year and are completely. New to turkeys. We hatched some eggs that were 'mismarked' from an auction. They were marked as 'Royal Palm' and even my inexperienced eye can see that they are not. Can anyone tell me what breed they think these poults may be?

They are 2 weeks old.

They look like my bronze breasted :)

I have my thoughts, but does anyone want to hazard a guess at my poults. They are just over 2 months old.

I know they aren't the best photos, but they are the ones I could get of each one individually. These little ones are definitely flock birds... they rarely get more than a couple feet away from each other.

So my BR hen is finally starting to lay a clutch of eggs and is up to 9, but every time she goes to her nest to lay number 10, my big BR tom "Chester" runs over and tries to breed with her. And in the process always breaks at least one egg. UGGGGGG. I really need to get more hens to keep him occupied for times like this
