Turkey Talk for 2014

Hello everyone I own only two turkeys right now one is a male bourbon red the other is a chocolate female I was just wondering when will my turkey begin to lay I know they don't lay much but I'm just curious and when will my turkey begin trying to mate with her also will be get aggressive because right now he is just the cutest sweetest and most curious bird I own

She will begin laying in the spring. Some say as early as February/March. To keep her laying, keep one dummy egg in the nest, and collect eggs constantly. As for mating, I can't tell you that. Men mature at different ages... And some never do! :-D

This is my first time at raising turkey chicks. I have only 5, they are the white domestic breed . They are 12 weeks old. I have one chick that has become bow legged, it is difficult for him to walk and he mainly lays down to eat and drink. I have oyster shell grit, Purina start n grow feed and water available at all times. They are set to be processed October 9th at which time they will be 20 weeks old.

Any suggestions for my bowlegged turkey chick?

Do this only if there is no blackhead in the area ...

Turkeys have a little trouble with the basics, like learning to eat and drink. I had read where a person hatches chicks and poults and raises them toghether.

So I thought I would try it. It worked out pretty good. We had no failure to thrive issues, and still have the three that hatched. They are almost 12 weeks now.

The burbon reds where a little too timid for the dominiques, so they ended up in with the silkies.

I would put poults with chicks again, but I would use silkie chicks about 2 or 3 weeks old next time.

My turkey loves his hens. The ones that grew up with him, but not the hens from the other coop. He will pick on throws..

I hatch chicks for my poults also it does help them learn to eat and drink faster.

Has anyone here ever given subcutaneous fluids to their turkeys or chickens? Looking for tips and suggestions on what works best.
