Turkey Talk for 2014

Are your young ones toms or hens? my young toms have already shown signs of possible aggression, so they need to head to the freezer soon.

The ones squabbling are the boys, I have 4 young boys and 3 young girls. The girls are little angels. I am a little disappointed in JJ (my older tom) I would have thought he would have put an end to this squabbling. He is very friendly and just likes people and follows us everywhere. The young Toms just follow him and jostle to be closest to him.

Yesterday, my son and I went squirrel hunting in the woods around the farmstead. We only got one squirrel, I think some of this was because our hunting party consisted of My son, myself, my 2 dogs and 5 turkeys. They followed us the entire time we were hunting announcing their presence. However, even while hunting they were having little fights.

I separated my young toms, since I keep ducks in with my turkeys, and I was afraid the little fights were to much for them. My older tom was usually at the center of the squabbles most of the time.

Hi ya'll I wanted to share my naughty Burbon Boys (and Royal Palms too, lol) Funny thing though I've caught them picking on some of my chicks who leave the grow out pen what they really protect around here is me from our lonley mean ol' goosie.

Goosie was born April 2014 and was a "dud" that made it, the Turk's are from an August 11th hatch (about 5 months old).

They pretty much go where they want to the 1st picture is them deciding that the new grow out yard for the chicks is acceptable for their perch and the chicks must stay in or else, lol. They had some 1 week old chick tutors help me grow them up just right. We lost 3 due to FTT (failure to thrive) during the first week, 1 Royal Palm (hen I think :( at 3 weeks to the stupid dog I saved), and the last loss was last week we lost 1 of the Red Burbon Boy's to the same stupid dog. Well I guess I'm the stupid one for keeping him but he was a starved abandoned Pit someone may (probbably) used as a bait dog. The good news for him (

) he was more than likely the fullest he had ever been in his life. He had eaten everything except a wing /thigh n leg about 25 feathers left too! He's fixed now and I hope to find a person to take him, he's good with everything but the birds. But another positive other than his full stomach is I think I can have alot less problem with the harvesting of my turkey's... I love to eat turkey but had gotten way to attached to these guys. The meat on the RB turkey leg that was left looked like we have done a good job fattening them up lol. They eat everyone's food that's their idea of free-range, they eat EVERYONE's food then their's then try to open the flock raiser bags lol.

that is what I thought too. Guess I'll wait and see what happens. Or chickens have quit laying maybe I'll just eat the eggs.. My chihuahuas killed the wheat marans hen that was laying she got in their yard wanted to kill the little devils.

Oh no poor thing. Sorry to hear that.

I would eat the eggs too. Turkey eggs are my favorite!

Turkeys are giving me fits the last little bit. My tom appears to be on the mend, but my hen has decided, after months of peaceful coexhistence on free range, that she needs to eliminate my pullets.

She killed one, but until this morning I thought it was a hawk attack. Then I saw her relentlessly pecking at the head of another pullet, that she had knocked off her feet, this morning. I broke it up and it looks like my pullet will survive.

The question is what should I do to protect my chickens? As of now I plan on catching that hen and putting her in isolation for a bit. Is there anything else shy of freezer camp that I can do. If I add another hen will that help or exacerbate the problem? I open to suggestions. I really don't want to get rid of my hen, if I need to I will.

She has not shown any aggresion toward people, only the chickens.
I have had this happen whenever the turkeys get bored.if I give them something new to mess with in the run/yard they settle down for a bit.
