Turkey Talk for 2014

Was finally able to Candle Broody Turkey eggs while she was off the nest.. Out of 18, 15 looked good, two looked clear with 3 being iffy... I took those five into the coop to candle again, sure enough, 2 clears but the other three had some good veining and an obvious Embryo.. It is amazing as she has only been sitting day and night for four days, for a week she was on and off the nest a few times a day, maybe off a total of 4-5 hours? Like I said, the 13 I left with her were darker than the 3... Anyhoo, long story short, while I was in the coop I noticed one of my hens that hatched a clutch back in January was still on a nest she had been on early that morning.. It didn't take long for me to look at those three eggs, look at her and make a decision, took the egg out from under her and slipped these three Turkey eggs in its place, closed up her nest and will see how it goes.. By the look of those eggs I would say atleast 7 days so I marked the calendar accordingly....

If all goes well I'll still make the no sitting hens while on vacation deadline I promised my neighbor

Quote: I have had 2 week old's want to tend the younger ones. And my one month old's do tend the young one's and let the babies hide under them like they would their momma. It is amazing and I had a 3 week old tending 20+ poults and she loved them!

this is the first poult that I had in another brooder with some chicks and she had a fit wanting in with these poults when she heard them. She took the place of their momma she had over 20 to tend.

The feed stores in my area won't have a clue about blackhead, and I'd bet the same is true for the extension offices. Sure, call the feed store, extension offices, but then call an avian pathologist in your State and ask them if what they think.

Think about this... how many of you send *all* dead chicks, chickens, poults, turkeys, etc off for necropsy or do them yourselves? Then think about your neighbors, what do they do with theirs? How can agency possibly know what diseases are in what parts of your town, county or State?

The small feed store in my area did know what it was and was able to tell me that there had been no reports of it around, same with the extension office. Yes, for sure do your due diligence but I have been hatching and raising my birds together for over a year with absolutely no issues with blackhead...

Also, when one of my Turkey Hens contracted Cocci last year I did call an avian vet and asked about Blackhead (I didn't know what was wrong with her) and was told the same thing I had been told from the feed store and extension office.

I get my poultry disease info from our state npip vet. She covers the whole state & pretty much has to know what is an issue where. She told me she's never seen a case of blackhead in Ohio, so pretty sure we're fine here.

I was curious, so I called the lab in Ohio and asked if they had ever seen blackhead and their answer was yes, but not recently.

The npip vet had told me she had not seen it in all the time she has been a vet...and she's in her 50's...so assuming that would be at least 20-30 years.

Unless she was an avian pathologist or an avian vet, there is a good chance she would not have seen it. I mean this in a nice way, but are you sure she's an actual vet? I ask because one does not need to be a vet to be a NPIP tester.

I am not lying, today I talked to an avian pathologist at the Ohio lab and he assured me that the state of Ohio has seen birds with blackhead, just not recently.

Yes, she is the NPIP vet for the State of Ohio. She is an actual vet, the ONLY actual vet employed by the NPIP program. I've dealt with her for several years. A friend has been NPIP for almost 10 yrs & she's the only tester they have ever sent to test her birds as well.
Anyone can take the training to test chickens & ducks. That's true. But this woman actually works for NPIP & is a vet.

I guess the question is, how long ago is "not recently?" 5 years? 10 years? 20 years? 50??? "Not recently" can mean a lot of different things depending on who says it. The state vet told me she had never encountered a case of it. I know she's been doing this for over 10 years, but how much longer I'm not sure.

This is the lake, flooding my run.

Standing inside my run.

Just outside my run. The coop wasn't flooded this morning, but with all the runoff and more rain coming, it will flood. The houses are safe. Roads to the north and south are closed due to water over the bridges. We can go west for a ways. East is still open. We're supposed to get dry weather next week. Counting my blessings. 27 dead and 13 missing. Hundreds of homes swept away or flooded. Hard to believe all of the lakes were so low, some 20 feet, just a month ago.

I am so sorry! I am praying for everyone affected by these floods!
