Turkey Talk for 2014

Many people like this thread. People they know still frequent it and its a place people are still having good conversation with people they have been talking to all last year and really years earlier when the turkey talk threads started.

100% agree... It was this thread that I first expressed a desire to raise Turkeys, I followed it for that first year so excited to report I had gotten eggs... Why move away from a thread that's been successful and so many people have contributed.. So what if it says 2014..

Last night we had some bad storms come through and take the cover off my Bourbon Red pen with my two hens sitting on a clutch of eggs. Now I have no idea if the eggs will hatch. Both the hens are soaking wet and I know the rain had to have made it into the nest and got the eggs wet.

Just get them some dry bedding asap & let them sort it out. All should be fine.

Thanks Silkie

The eggs getting wet isn't the issue. Staying wet is. I have a goofy slate hen who usually lays her eggs in the water bowl. As long as I catch them within an hour or so they usually hatch. If they get left over night they are duds. It all depends on how much water they soak up. Your girls are just damp, not saturated, so should be fine. Dry bedding asap will help a lot. The girls know what to do.

Thanks. I got the roof back on and the nest changed out with dry bedding and put the eggs back and the girls are back on the nest. :fl  The eggs and the nest were all very DAMP! I am concerned the eggs felt so damp.

Wait a few days & try to candle a few of the eggs. That should give you a better idea of how things are going.

5 out of 5 of my Porter Bronze turkey hatching eggs hatched! I'm still waiting on the Black turkeys. Those eggs took a rough ride for some reason. 5 of the 10 were completely scrambled from shipping. The remaining 5 started developing kind of slowly, so I think they are behind the others and there is still hope they will hatch. They aren't officially due until tomorrow. These are my first Bronze turkeys. They are heritage Bronze, not broad-breasted, from Frank Reese (Good Shepard) line but Kevin Porter sent them to me. Frank Reese no longer sells to the public so I feel fortunate to get these. I'm looking forward to growing them. Plans are to cross these into my Lilacs next year to improve their size and hatchability but if I like them well enough, I may just have to have a pure Bronze pen!
