Turkey Talk for 2014

Yesterday we found a snake going thru my pens that were full of chicks and turkey poults and my broody BR hens.

Watch your pens!

Sometimes I am really glad I live where I live that the only thing we wrestle is salmon lol I am not afraid of snakes (because um, they aren't that big nor are they poisonous ) but that thing would have me running for the hills!

Last incubator hatch is now officially in lockdown.. Temp running 98-99... Humidity kicked up to 75 but stabilized at 68... Last candle this morning has me concerned with couple of the Narg eggs this guy brought for me to incubate, out of 7 I had 3 that made it past day 18.. Candled last night and two look to be late quitters, no movement but full so we shall see, feel bad for the guy, he paid $6.50 per egg!! I told him that was almost as much as I charge for a live polt! I have only removed two eggs from my BR hens (blood ring and clear) the rest look awesome, already pushing into the air cell (no pips yet) Our deal was that we would split any Nargs that hatched and I wouldn't charge him for incubation and he will buy 10 of my BR chicks at $8. each, now it look like we will be lucky to just get the one of the Nargs which means I don't get one...

YIKES!! I also just saw a snake a few days ago, first time since I have lived here the past 2 1/2 years though it's Southern California and I am sure they were around. I was walking in from the backyard and there was a snake just relaxing on my steps; I don't think it was poisonous though. Of course we just brought home 3 Broad Breasted Whites for my son's 4H project and I am hoping the snake stays satisfied with all the gophers around.

5 out of 5 of my Porter Bronze turkey hatching eggs hatched! I'm still waiting on the Black turkeys. Those eggs took a rough ride for some reason. 5 of the 10 were completely scrambled from shipping. The remaining 5 started developing kind of slowly, so I think they are behind the others and there is still hope they will hatch. They aren't officially due until tomorrow. These are my first Bronze turkeys. They are heritage Bronze, not broad-breasted, from Frank Reese (Good Shepard) line but Kevin Porter sent them to me. Frank Reese no longer sells to the public so I feel fortunate to get these. I'm looking forward to growing them. Plans are to cross these into my Lilacs next year to improve their size and hatchability but if I like them well enough, I may just have to have a pure Bronze pen!

Yay!! Sooo precious, congratulations =)

I am jealous. I cannot wait for my Porters babies to get here!!! They should be here sometime in the second half of the month
