Turkey Talk for 2014

Back from a short vacation in Oklahoma!! Great seeing family and watching my Nephew tie the knot with his long time GF

BR hen sitting out in the old brooder box was never able to stay long enough to get a successful hatch, I brought three eggs in and placed them in the incubator, one survived and once it internally piped I took it out to a broody chicken that I had been fighting for a few weeks, poult hatched yesterday and caught a glimpse of this this morning peeking out from under the hen... We dismantled the BR's nest.. This egg was 9 days late!!! The BR hen is now laying eggs in the corner of the main coop... Blah... goofy turkey!
BR hen that was sitting her clutch in the coop ended up with 4 eggs, on the date they were due to hatch I walked out and found her on another nest, when I checked hers one of the poults had started to zip but looks to have gotten stuck and died, I took the remaining three in and placed them in the incubator.. Two hatched and I returned them to the hen, she accepted them and has them out in the run with the rest of the flock, that is when she can pull them away from yet another chicken momma that hatched two turkeys the week before (she kinda adopted the newbies lol)

Our little farm is in broody overload, before we left I had promised my neighbor I would not have any broody chickens, I had so many chickens in broody jail I ran out of room and told her to just kick them off the nest every time she went out.. lol.. I came home to 5 broodys!!! I am letting them sit as I ordered 3 bronze turkeys from my feed store, they should be here July 28th, Anyone had luck allowing hens to raise them?

Your place kinds of sounds like ours. It's hot and all the girls want to sit! I don't think I can handle any more girls going broody either I don't have any more room for hens with chicks or babies!

If you already have a hen with other poults you might try slipping the new ones under her at dark so that in the morning she will have them. And see if that will work for you. Hopefully it will. If not you will see the new poults standing away from her.

Make that 6 broody's... Missed one of my Speckled Sussex's so went on the hunt, walk around the property three times before I found her.. In between some rolled up chain link and tires we have stored, I looked twice before I found her, My quick assessment says she is sitting on 8-10 eggs, all the same color and size so they must be hers :) Rouge turkey has found another nesting site, she joined a few chickens in laying in the burn pile (good thing we cant burn until Oct now ;) ) Going to allow her to try again I suppose, nothing else to do but eat the darn eggs anyways lol

The only thing that suffers when they go broody is egg production, I can sell the youngsters pretty easy, we now have three pens lol.. Grow out pen, finishing pen and main coop.. I keep the pullets I want and sell the rest.
I will try and graph the poults to a hen, my best broody will hatch 4 days before the poults arrive, I have graphed chicks onto her before and she has done fine.

Quote: Sounds great! Take lots of pics of all the babies. :)

My BR hens are sitting on their second batch of eggs and trying I hope the do get some to hatch this time. I also want to try to get them to take the 5 BBB and BBW I have coming a few days after these are suppose to hatch. I am trying to decide if I should take their tom out of their pen or not. I do worry he might not take to the babies. This will be a first time for all of them. So I guess we shall see. :/

Is anyone else waiting on a shipment from Porters? When we ordered the website said mid-June, then in an email were later sited mid to late June. I know they will probably come soon but I am super excited and ready for my turkeys already. I am also nervous maybe they are having issues with hatching one of the varieties I ordered and am going to get a bunch of substitutes.

For those of you who have ordered poults before from Porters what was your experience, how many birds were substituted (and what was your original order) if any?

ETA::
I was getting super impatient and emailed them. Kevin replied saying my order should ship this week, hopefully tomorrow. WooHoo!!!

You will be very happy with your birds from Porters! So far I have not had any substitutes on any birds but I am sure it does happen some.
Have you ordered from them multiple times? I just got notification this morning that they shipped!!!

We ordered 24, compiled of 5 different varieties. I am hoping they all make it as ordered and safely.BUT since we ordered so many different colors, I requested that any substitutes be within the range of colors already in the order, so it shouldn't be any random colors but an extra of something else we already wanted. 17 of these are for me and 7 are for a friend.

Did you receive any extras in your order?
