Toms, drakes & roosters have all beed known to set eggs but may not sit the entire time needed for incubation. It's not all that unusual. If you want the eggs to actually hatch you will need to have a back up plan (incubator) ready in case he gives up before hatch. Muscovies take 35 days to hatch. Turkeys only take 28.

Thanks for this info! It's the first time I've seen the males set. I'm not worried about the eggs, the duck's a good mother and hasn't abandonned the nest. I've a lot of experience with Muscovies.

I've seen many ganders, toms, drakes & roosters (especially silkies) help their hens sit nests. Many will also help brood the babies. It's not as common but I have heard of males actually sitting a nest clear to hatch. If your muscovy hen is currently sitting that nest she may just be using him as a babysitter to keep her eggs warm while she is eating & bathing.

I just called Frank Reese's place to see if or how I could get some stock from him. However he does not ship . But he told me years ago he sold stock to Country Hatchery in Oklahoma and that they ship

. So I called The Hatchery and asked him if he still had Frank Reese's stock and he said he does. So I will be ordering from him he has some ready now! And he said his min. order is 10 poults. Here is the link to his website: http://www.countryhatchery.net/order_information.html

Does Frank ship eggs but not poults, or does he ship nothing? When I looked on his website it looked like he only shipped frozen turkeys.

At Country Hatchery, are all the turkey varieties from Frank Reese's stock, or just some of them?

If you only want 3 turkey poults (instead of the 10 required for shipment at Country Hatchery or the 15 required by most hatcheries), Country Hatchery had a small order option on turkeys, but it's not obvious on their website. Go to their home page (the link is in the previous post), then click on catalog, then click on special deals. The first thing that will come up is the pan fry special (I love hatcheries that offer those -- it's unthinkable to me that excess cockerels should be thrown in a woodchipper instead of sold at cost). But if you scroll down you will find all the small order options, including turkeys. The cost is $55 for 3 poults, your choice of any breed they offer (except wild turkeys, which are a different price). It is somewhat unclear, but I believe this includes shipping, since there is a discount if you pick up at the hatchery.

They also offer turkey eggs for hatching, $42 for 8 eggs or $80 for 15 eggs, which includes shipping.

Thank you for the link, chickadoodles. I had wondered how to get Frank Reese stock. It's nice to see a hatchery that appears to do a good job (some of them are awful).

Thanks Chickadoodles for posting about Frank Reese's stock since I have been waiting to order White Holland hatching eggs from him. I talked with him last Sept and indeed he does not ship poults, however, he will ship hatching eggs. Something to keep in mind if you want his stock. Frank said to contact him in March for hatching eggs....so I'm patiently waiting.

I am sorry but I did not ask about eggs. I have not had any luck trying to hatch them. I was looking for poults. And at the Country Hatchery they sell hatching eggs though. I just asked the man if he still had Frank Reese's stock in turkey and he said yes he does not have a bunch of breeds but has a nice variety. I was told on the Heritage Breed thread that Frank Reese has a wonderful reputation for his birds. That is why I called him. You are welcome for the link, I thought maybe someone might find it useful. I called Urch's and asked for a price list as I could not find the one on the previous thread.

Chicken soup does sound yummy!

For breakfast this morn I ate slow cooked chicken over jasmine rice. I slow cooked a whole chicken(home grown of course) in Italian dressing over night. MMMM YUM

MMMM It is. I ate it for breakfast, lunch and dinner for 2 days lol. And it is so simple.

Put the whole chicken in the slow cooker and pour an entire bottle of Italian dressing in with it and let it cook for the day. Then take the whole chicken out and debone and put the chicken back in the crockpot with the Italian dressing juices. I cook Jasmine rice on the side and then in a bowl of rice pour chicken and juice on top, then salt and pepper.
