Turkey Talk for 2014

Does anyone know if turkeys will move other eggs? Ive been going into the coop and finding what I thought were big odd chicken eggs in my duck nests, and my duck eggs laying everywhere. Stupid me just realized its my turkeys laying in the duck nests.

Yep, they will do that. Better make a few more nests. Apparently they like the ones you made for the ducks best.

Lol oh great. The ducks made the nests tho. Ill throw down some more straw and see if they make new ones somewhere else. Thank you.

If you have access to old tires, they make great nests & allow the birds to share without shoving each other's eggs out. Just make sure to check inside the tire itself (under the rim) for eggs because they can get pushed under there if not kept stuffed tight with bedding.

I'm thinking about starting turkeys again but in the past when I raised Turkeys when they turn about 2-3 months old for some reason most always die idk way... Should they be kept separate from chickens? Or should they be caged up without touching the ground soil? Heard rumors to do both of these but what do you suggest doing when having chickens and wanting to introduce turkeys again.

I raised mine in a brooder with a few baby chicks to teach them to eat and drink and they were all part of the flock I kept mine together.
I did keep my turkey and baby chicks in a brooder till they were completely feathered out and along with the chicks I put them all in the pen and coop at the same time so there would not be any fighting over pecking order. It did work for me as my turkey never hurt any of my chickens and they would perch and sleep together.

The reason for keeping them away from chickens & off the ground is that chickens can carry blackhead with no symptoms & it is lethal to turkeys. Sounds like you may have blackhead in your area. We don't have it around here & my turkeys, chickens, ducks & geese all get penned together at times. Try calling your local ag center or extensin office & asking if blackhead is an issue in your area. If it is then that is the likely problem.

Hey y'all I bought 4 turkey's this past weekend. I think one hen will be laying soon. The Tom is big a mean as all get out.he will not let me around his hens. He ia a MIxed breed the others are Bourbon Reds. Y'all are talking about Blackhead the oldest hen keeps fighting the rooster in that pen with them and now her head looks black. I thought it was from fighting. what y'all think?

Black head doesn't actually turn the head black. Most likely it is from fighting. You could always post a pic, that will help us see what you see.
