Turkey Talk for 2014

oh between thermostats being bad and the darn things just up and quitting.. I ended up with either cold dead eggs or cooked eggs... mostly it was cooked eggs.. they don't do well when the incubators keep going higher and higher in temp without being touched!.. Customer service was no help either... and with as many as I had owned you would think they would have cared a bit more!.. I got sick of buying replacement parts especially when they were still "under warranty".. grr

Does anyone have recommendations on an incubator ? My son wants to hatch some poults, so I don't want to spend too much - as it maybe a passing fad ! I was thinking the styrofoam type that hold about 30 (or so) eggs ?

I have a Little Giant, a Farm Innovator & a Hovabator. All are very similar & work very similar. I don't have any real complaints about any of them. I will give a word of advice: Regardless of brand, do not use the water troughs in the bottom. It is to hard to get water back out & humidity back down if you get too much water in them. Use cups, bowls or small jars for water. You can bend a piece of hardware cloth over the top of the water containers at lockdown to keep babies out. If humidity is too low, add another water container. Too high, take 1 out. No hassles.

I bought an LG and hatch more than enough-- about $50 at farm store, less on line. Even a support group here on BYC to get the best results possible.

When I saw how simple the design was, I too made one out of what I had on hand plus the purchase of the water heater thermostat and a bottle lamp kit. I can fit waaaaayy too many eggs in tht as an incubator and use the LG for a hatcher.

Yinepu, with the number of hours you have spent hatching, I"m sure you know what you like. ANy emu's going in the incubator this year??

well.. lets see.. been hatching for over 50 years.. and I only take off about 2 to 3 weeks per year from hatching... so... yeah.. I've hatched out a few eggs.. lol

And yup.. I have around a dozen emu eggs in the bator as I type this.. a few due to hatch within the next week or so.. plus another coolerbator with chicken eggs in it and waiting for more eggs to arrive.. plus as soon as the ducks and geese start laying I'll be tossing their eggs in too.. not to mention peafowl... no parrots scheduled so far for this year.. but it's early yet!

Can I use a Jumbo size chicken egg carton to incubate turkey eggs??? Will they fit pointy end down or are they too big?

A dozen?? HOly smokes!!! THat's a lot of mini velociraptors. What is the hatch rate usually?

Have any turkey eggs in cooking?

400

I'd keep one and eat the other three. :) Mmmmm
