Turkey Talk for 2014

If you clip it be REALLY careful. She looks like she's had very poor nutrition previously, and sometimes their beaks will be very brittle. Be sure the clipper blades are new and very sharp, and don't trim it down to the normal length, just enough that it won't likely break on its own with normal use. She will wear the rest down on her own.

Yes I agree just a tiny. Its light enough you should be able to see the quick and avoid getting close to it. A good worming or two and love and food she will be stunning!

Hey. Hopefully one of y'all can help me. I just ordered turkey eggs and wanted to double check hatching recomendations. I hatch a lot of chicks, using the dry hatch method and temp is right at or just below 100. Is this okay for turkeys as well?

If it works for your chicks with your set up it will work for your turkeys. Incubate them exactly the same except humidity about 10% higher for lockdown. They need that little extra at lockdown since they take a bit longer to hatch & are more susceptible to shrink wrap.

my grandfarther could tie a string around a small rock the hook the other end of the string to a stick

with just those items & a map of a property he could tell you where to drill for water

how deep to go down & how many gallons per/min. you would get & he was dead on.

so yes with the rite person it can give good results

now on to turkey talk

my bronze girl started laying last week

can i figure on about 6 eggs a week all spring?

how long into the summer will she keep it up?

thanks
piglett

Congrats on your girls starting to lay eggs! Last year my turkeys laid almost everyday. with the occasional day off. Im pretty sure I got 7 eggs from each girl most weeks. My turkeys here in NH laid all the way in to fall, the eggs came less and further apart toward the end, but one of my girls laid til the middle or end of Oct and the other girls laid into the beginning of Nov.

we only started with 4 shipped in feedstore babies last july
one fell over dead after a couple months (not sure why)
that left us with 1 runt & the pair we have now
the runt just never got any real size to her
once it turned cold that was it for her
maybe it's for the best
no point in breeding a substandard bird
we intend to keep a couple more females &
maybe a backup male for our small turkey flock this year
